Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has said his side need to try to play with more "risk" and belief in the way they can perform if they are to ultimately steer clear of relegation in League One.

The Posh picked up a point in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Stevenage after a run of 10 defeats in 11 away from home.

It kept Ferguson's side three points clear of the bottom four, although Crawley - in the final relegation place - have a game in hand.

Cian Hayes' goal in the 67th minute cancelled out Boro's opener 10 minutes into the second half as Posh went on to secure only their ninth point out of a possible 45 on the road this season.

Despite earning their first point in three games, Ferguson said he was "very disappointed" with the result.

"I felt it was a real winnable game but we didn't threaten enough," he told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"We didn't play with as much risk as perhaps we should've, which is understandable given where we are and our recent form

"It gives us something to build on but it's definitely two points dropped."

With another away trip at the weekend - to play-off chasing Huddersfield Town - followed by their EFL Trophy semi-final at Wrexham, Posh are in the middle of four testing games away from the Western Homes Stadium.

"We haven't been getting anything away from home. I've seen a lot more determination [against Stevenage] and we were more like ourselves but it's the last bit - and that's what we have to get right.

"We were too frantic and that's where we're at at the moment," Ferguson added.

Once Peterborough's run of away games is done, they entertain third-from-bottom Shrewsbury Town in a crucial relegation fixture on 1 March.

Ferguson knows they have to find a sharper cutting edge before then.

"I want to play in a way that gets us control of the game and the players have to have more belief in the way we can play and do play," he said.

"We got a bit of that back but, frankly, individuals have got to have performances that I think warrant staying in the team, and if they're playing then doing enough to keep the shirt, and at the moment I'm not seeing enough of that.

"For us to get out of trouble we have to win games and we have to score goals."
