Why is Aston Villa v Crystal Palace at 7pm on Sunday?

  • Published

Aston Villa's Premier League match against Crystal Palace is taking place at 19:00 BST on Sunday, 31 August due to Palace's Uefa Conference League commitments.

When the Premier League first confirmed their August television picks, the Villa Park fixture had been selected to be the weekend's Friday night match on 29 August.

The original fixture date had to be moved due to Palace playing Norwegian side Fredrikstad in the second leg of their Conference League play-off tie on Thursday, 28 August.

As the match was already selected as a designated standalone television match, it was still given this treatment when arranging an alternative time and date.

With an international break taking place after this weekend's matches, the Monday night fixture is not being used, meaning that slot could not be selected.

Therefore, the Premier League opted for a Sunday night kick-off.

In effect, the Sunday night slot is a back-up fixture slot which the Premier League will use as and when necessary.
