Hednesford Town have confirmed the sacking of manager Steve King just one day before their appearance in the first round of the FA Cup.

A club statement said the decision followed a "breakdown in the relationship" between King and the club's board.

An interim management team of Martin Hunter, Junior Lewis and Andy Turner will take charge for Saturday's home tie against Gainsborough Trinity.

"The club’s priority is to uphold its principles of integrity and professionalism in all matters," the statement continued.

"Further updates will follow as the club progresses with its plans."

King was appointed in May following a short spell at Havant & Waterlooville.

His most successful spell came with Lewes, who he guided to promotions from Isthmian League Division One South through to the National League.

King's final game in charge of Hednesford was a 2-1 home defeat by Athertone Collieries last Saturday which left them 16th in Northern Premier League Division One West., external

The Pitmen's run to the fourth round in 1997, when they lost to Premier League side Middlesbrough, made national headlines.
