Why was Infantino at Trump's Gaza peace talks?

- Published
Fifa president Gianni Infantino was among those in attendance as US President Donald Trump and world leaders signed a declaration for bringing peace to Gaza at a summit in the Egypt.
At the gathering, Infantino pledged Fifa's support to rebuild football infrastructure in Gaza as part of a wider post-war reconstruction, hence his attendance.
Infantino said that Fifa would help to restore football in the city of Gaza and wider Palestinian territories, including rebuilding facilities destroyed during Israel's two-year military operation in Gaza.
"It's something that is really important for Fifa to be here to support, to help, to assist, to make sure that this peace process comes to fruition," Infantino said after the signing of a document outlining plans for regional stability and reconstruction.
"Football's role has to be to support, to unite, to give hope.
"We will help to rebuild all the football facilities in Gaza, bring football back together with the Palestinian Football Association, and create opportunities for children through the game."

Trump's relationship with Infantino
It is not the first time Infantino and Trump have been in a public setting with one another.
They met during Trump's first presidential term, after the US was awarded the co-hosting rights to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The pair have appeared at summits in the past including at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 2020.
In May of this year, Infantino met with the US President and leaders from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
It meant the Fifa president was more than three hours late for an annual meeting in Paraguay, which led to a mid-meeting walkout in protest by senior Uefa officials.
Trump was also present for Chelsea's 2025 Club World Cup final win over Paris St-Germain, sitting alongside Infantino. The two helped hand out medals and the trophy following the match, which led to Trump ending up in the middle of Chelsea's initial trophy lift.
As well as that, the duo have hosted a number of public Fifa events together throughout the year ahead of the 2026 World Cup taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Infantino even allowed Trump to hold the prestigious World Cup following one of several meetings between the two at Trump's Oval Office in August.
