Cambridge United manager Garry Monk says his team need to find "a lot more wins" like their victory over Shrewsbury Town in their bid to stay in League One.

The U's impressive 4-1 victory over their fellow strugglers on Saturday was their first in the league since October and, although they remain in the bottom four, it kept them three points behind Crawley, who are just outside the relegation zone.

"I think it proved again we've got a really good group of lads here," Monk told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"They've got a really good attitude and spirit amongst them."

After a 3-0 defeat by Reading in their previous game, Monk had said there would be a "huge" response from his players for the visit of Shrewsbury - and his team duly delivered as Shayne Lavery's first-minute goal put the U's on their way.

Lavery doubled the lead before half-time before further strikes from Dan Nlundulu and Elias Kachunga ensured the home crowd went home happy from a blustery Abbey Stadium.

"It was so important to get a good start and, once we did, the crowd came with us," Monk said.

"We're trying to break it down into smaller parts - the next game and also the week [overall] and we had a setback on Tuesday [against Reading].

"It was important, not just where we are the league and the opposition, and we needed a response.

"It's one win for us - but a good one and we need a lot more like that, especially at home.

"I'm just really really pleased about the response from the players.

"We did both sides of the game more than well enough to deservedly win."
