Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid could be sidelined for up to 12 weeks with a broken hand sustained during Sunday's south coast derby draw with Southampton.
The 28-year-old was forced off in the first half following a collision with team-mate Connor Ogilvie and Saints winger Tom Fellows.
After the game he was seen leaving St Mary's Stadium with his hand in a brace.
"Nico as we suspected has picked up a fracture," Pompey boss John Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent.
"He has a fracture in his right hand which isn't great, so we're looking at an extended period on the sidelines for Nico unfortunately.
"We're probably looking at eight to 12 weeks which is a real blow for us, and as we knew at the time it takes a lot for Nico to have to come off."
Schmid was replaced on Sunday by Ben Killip, who signed a new two-year-deal to stay at the club in the summer.
Killip only had to save one shot on target in the second half as his side secured their third Championship clean sheet of the season.
"For the moment Ben has done enough to come in and take that spot in the team," Mousinho said.
"We want to have that healthy competition and we have some trust in Ben, which is why we put him on the bench for us and signed him last summer.
"This was all off the back of what he did for us in the back end of last season and it's why we strengthened the goalkeeper department, so if something like this happened we still have strong options."
Also injured in the collision was full-back Ogilvie, who was forced off at half-time with a neck injury and a visible bump on his head.
Mousinho said a late call will be made on his fitness for Saturday's game against Sheffield Wednesday.
"Connor is okay," added the Portsmouth boss. "We're going to do an assessment on Friday and see how he is, he's just taken a bit of time to recover."
