Perhaps the abiding image of the game as John Mousinho and Will Still exchange a few pleasantries at the end of the game following a terse handshake.

That was after a derby that threatened to bubble into life but never quite erupted, but you sense the visitors will head back along the M27 that little bit more content with the result and how they played over the 90 minutes.

It will be interesting to see how that needle between managers develops leading into the reverse fixture at Fratton Park on January 25.

Southampton head coach Will Still has delivered a few jibes at Portsmouth's approach today.

"It was very frustrating. the first half was not good enough. I think we have literally wasted 45 minutes of what we were doing by taking things too literally and too stereotypically," Still told BBC Radio Solent.

“When you are playing a 4-2-3-1 you need a bit of movement and personality on the ball and to open space.

“Away from that it was a bit of a stop-start game. There was a lot of free-kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks and it just sort of flattened things to be honest.

"But maybe that was what they wanted, they probably came here for that and got what they wanted so fair play to them for that.

“I just want to win games of football. I was more frustrated with the scenario of the game, it was just very stop, start, long balls, second balls, fouls. It just did not get into the flow of what it could have been, what it should have been, so we have to fix that.”

Pompey boss John Mousinho has voiced frustration at the incident which led to goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid's injury and the decision to remove Connor Ogilvie at half-time.

Schmid left his area to clear a long ball forward and Saints winger Tom Fellows challenged Ogivie, sending him into Schmid which has left both Pompey players injured.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, Mousinho believes it was a push on Ogilvie that caused the collision in the first place.

"Andre Dozzell took a knock in training yesterday, so the fact he got through the full 90 minutes is really pleasing," Mousinho said.

"Nicolas Schmid and Connor Ogilvie are both not great, they are both injured obviously and that is probably the thing that I'm most frustrated about in the game.

“The goalkeeper is coming out, Connor gets pushed in the back which was extremely dangerous but nothing happened.

“I think the injury with Connor is his neck. We don't think it is concussion and we didn't use our concussion substitute.

"Nicolas has a problem with his hand, which we will wait and see what the damage is.”

“I'm pretty happy to be honest. It is a strange one because we were so good in the first half and the second half was slightly different and so towards the end of the game we made substitutions to make sure we secured the point which we did very well.

“I am extremely proud of the boys for their effort, extremely proud of the football club and the way we have done our business in recent weeks, and we can hopefully use this to springboard ourselves to bigger and better things.

“I certainly thought we were the better side in the first half, and weather we were in the second half, Southampton were probably better than us in the second half but on chances created and opportunities, I thought we were the better side."

Further north and news has just broken that Ruben Selles has been sacked by Sheffield United after a poor start to the season.

The Blades are bottom of the table having lost all five of their Championship games.

Portsmouth winger Josh Murphy speaking to ITV's Aaron Paul:

"It was a special occasion today. I think everyone is a bit gutted that we didn't get the three points because we feel we deserved it.

"But we dug in deep, took a lot of pressure from Southampton at the end of the game so maybe a draw is fair, but we feel a little disappointed.

"With derbies, tactics probably go out the window in the end. It becomes 11 versus 11 and you just have to win those battles. We came in at half time and were happy with how we performed.

"It felt like a home games at times. I've said it before that we have the best fans in the league, so we look forward to the next one being played back at Fratton Park later on in the year."

Here's what it all means for the Championship table after five games.

Pompey move within a point of the play-offs while Saints sit on six points with Blackburn and Ipswich.

Middlesbrough lead the way at the top with Stoke in second, while Sheffield United prop up the table with zero points.

City rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford make up the bottom three.

Southampton were horrendous in the first half, way too many loose passes. They were clearing the ball just for the sake of it. There was a lack of quality in my eyes.

It was better in the second half because the tempo was better, but they need to improve.

Southampton not bringing in a striker in the transfer window is a big mistake.

When you come to games like this, you have to be troubling the goalkeeper and neither side did that.

A very good point and a decent performance from Pompey in the end.

An enteraining South Coast derby ends goalless.

Pompey had the best of the first half with Andre Dozzell hitting the crossbar from distance.

Saints were much improved after the break but both sides struggled to create clearcut chances that could win the game.

A great occasion at St Mary's, only the second ever goalless draw between the rivals, with the draw probably a fair result.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis heads the out-swinging corner over the bar and that might be that.

In fact that is that, full-time, all square.

Andre Dozzell whips in a dangerous ball but it's well taken by Gavin Bazunu and he sets his Saints side away.

Zak Swanson is penalised for a foul on the touchline against Leo Scienza.

Ryan Manning sends in the deep ball and it's cleared behind for a corner.

Josh Murphy has been brilliant all afternoon on the left for Pompey.

This time he's on the edge of the box and fires a low ball across the face which goes agonisingly wide of the post with his team-mates unable to find the crucial touch.

Four minutes added on for one of these two sides to find a winner.
