Portsmouth boss John Mousinho described striker Colby Bishop as "incredible" and a "proper number nine" after his goal and performance against Leeds United on Sunday.

Pompey beat the league leaders 1-0 in a tight game at Fratton Park, with Bishop winning the game in the second half.

The 28-year-old ran on to a pass from Connor Ogilvie and chipped the ball past Illan Meslier before flexing his arms in celebration in front of the jubilant home fans.

"Colby has been incredible since the first minute I walked into the building." Mousinho told Sky Sports after the game.

"Coming back from major heart surgery, somehow coming back two months early, he's made a huge contribution to this season.

"When you take into account what he's been through this season, it's even better."

Bishop underwent a procedure over the summer after a potential risk had been identified during an off-season cardiac screening.

After not featuring during the start of the campaign, he made a surprise return to the squad in November, and he has since scored six goals and been a crucial presence on the field.

"Colby is a proper number nine," Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent.

"He is an old-school centre forward that gives you a huge amount, one of the things we have spoken to him about is creating space and dropping in, letting others go beyond him.

"We don't see him run in behind a huge amount, but it was really pleasing to see him there and it was a brilliant finish."

Bishop began his career with Notts County and joined Portsmouth from Accrington in the summer of 2022.

Last month he signed a new contract to stay at the club until the summer of 2028.

During his time at Fratton Park he has scored 51 goals in 122 appearances.

"That's personally the best win since I have been here. It means a lot to beat a team like that with those players." Bishop told ITV.

"When you go through something like I did and the support I got every day – I can't speak highly enough of the people in this city.

"Walking in from the car park you feel like nobody is going to come here and win."
