Port Vale manager Darren Moore is waiting to hear whether Jaheim Headley will add to the club's mounting injury list at wing-back.
Headley, who plays on the left flank, was taken off at half-time of the Valiants' goalless draw with Northampton in League One on Saturday.
Moore has already lost wing-backs Mitch Clark, Liam Gordon and Kyle John to injury this season, leaving the side short of cover.
"I'm hoping it's more of a precaution - he tightened right up so we had no hesitation in taking him off," Moore told BBC Radio Stoke.
"We will see over the next couple of days, but hopefully we have done the right thing."
Gordon was sidelined following the 20 September win over Mansfield, then four days later Clark was forced off just 15 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute in the Carabao Cup defeat by Arsenal.
John has not played since picking up a muscle problem in the defeat by Exeter on 13 September, but is believed to be nearing a return.
"That's the area where there is the biggest output so that's why we've got the volume of wing-backs that we have," Moore added.
"The physical demands are immense. In the last 10 days we lost two good players in that position, so when Jaheim started tightening up as well, he didn't feel he could carry on for the second half, so we're hoping it's precautionary."
