What are the rules on double-touch penalties?

  • Published

Accidental 'double-touch' penalties will be allowed to be retaken - but only if the kick was successful - in the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Where such kicks are unsuccessful, an indirect free-kick will be given to the defending team if they occur in a match, or be recorded as a miss if it happens during a penalty shootout.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab), which sets the sport's laws, updated the ruling on 1 July.

The clarification was made following the controversy caused by Julian Alvarez's penalty being disallowed for accidentally kicking the ball twice in a Champions League game for Atletico Madrid against Real Madrid in March.

Following the change, England's Beth Mead had to re-take her penalty after kicking the ball twice in the Euro 2025 final penalty shootout. Her re-taken penalty was subsequently saved.
