    England 0-1 Spain

    Karen Bardsley
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live at St Jakob-Park

It's disappointing to concede in that way. England were looking great in terms of the shape they were in. It is an overload on the right hand side, no one tracks the run from Ona Batlle and Mariona Caldentey just pulls off the shoulder to head it in.

  2. 'The perfect ball'published at 17:26 British Summer Time

    England 0-1 Spain

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Former England goalkeeper on BBC One at St Jakob-Park

There's nothing that Hannah Hampton could have done about that.

It is such a simple ball - nobody from England there to affect the cross.

It is the perfect ball. When Mariona Caldentey reaches it, she redefects the pace of the ball uncontested.

GOAL - England 0-1 Spainpublished at 17:24 British Summer Time

    Mariona Caldentey (25 mins)

It's typical flowing beautiful football from Spain, quick passing around the area.

It comes to Ona Batlle wide on the right and her cross is perfectly placed for Mariona Caldentey to nod in at the back post.

    England 0-0 Spain

Only teammate Claudia Pina (10) has had more shots on target at Euro 2025 than Spain's Esther Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, who has had Spain's only shot on target so far tonight in Basel, is the top scorer in Switzerland and has the highest expected goals (xG) total of any player at the tournament (5.4).

England's pressing from Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo is definitely causing Spain problems. You can sense a bit of frustration they haven't capitalised. Lauren James has to get herself into the game.

Mariona Caldentey picks up the ball on the edge of the area after some sumptuous passing around the box but the Arsenal midfielder's effort is wide.

  7. 'Top-class save'published at 17:20 British Summer Time

    England 0-0 Spain

    Rachel Brown-Finnis
Former England goalkeeper on BBC One at St Jakob-Park

It's a top-class save. Lauren Hemp sees the opportunity and gets across her player. That save, it is a good, technical, goalkeeping save.

  8. 'Redemption'published at 17:20 British Summer Time

    England 0-0 Spain

Cata Coll made that pass as Laia Aleixandri was looking in the opposite direction. That produced an absolutely incredible save from Cata Coll, redemption.

  9. GREAT SAVE!published at 19 mins

    England 0-0 Spain

Lauren Hemp charges down on a loose pass from the Spanish back line and fires off towards the near post but it's a brilliant save from Cata Coll to deny England the opener.

Apart from a part of one game, Lauren James has been so far off it in this tournament and not working as hard as usually would. Anyone who watches her regularly knows she's far better than she has shown, truly world class. Hopefully the real Lauren James will be able to turn up this evening.

The forward players on the pitch for England at the moment have not scored a goal in the knockout stages. And they don't look capable of changing that at the moment.

Lucy Bronze's attacking impact for England, including that brilliant pass to set up Alessia Russo's chance, has been clear to see so far.

The majority of the Lionesses' attacks so far have come down the right.

    England 0-0 Spain

England captain Leah Williamson said in her pre-match press conference that Spain are the best in the world at what they do but added that the Lionesses think there's some things they're pretty good at too.

The 2023 World Cup is not the lasting memory for these players. They beat Spain at Wembley earlier this year. They know they are capable.

England have to keep doing what you always need to against possession based sides - be disciplined and hard working defensively, but when you get it, aim to get forward quickly and in behind them when you get the chance.

Russo needs to press Coll more, she's known for trying too much and making errors with her feet.

An awkward angle that Georgia Stanway had to make a run at it. She is running trying to get her leg around it and she couldn't wrap it around the ball.

Georgia Stanway loves a shot from outside the box but she doesn't make the best connection with it and it's an easy gather for Cata Coll.

Everyone in the stadium apart from Lauren Hemp could see Lauren James was offside. She didn't want the ball. Ella Toone couldn't hide her frustrations and Sarina Wiegman is off her seat.

Spain throwing bodies forward, as you might expect. Alexia Putellas' square ball is cut out by Leah Williamson and England look to try and get up the pitch but it comes back to Hannah Hampton.

  19. 'Outstanding first 10 minutes'published at 17:12 British Summer Time

    England 0-0 Spain

    Karen Bardsley
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live at St Jakob-Park

This is exactly what we wanted to see from England. Over the course of the group stage and the knockout stages they started slow but it has been outstanding in these first 10 minutes.

Poor touch from Lauren James but possibly she knew she was miles offside.

Lauren Hemp waits to play the ball through to her but she's waited a bit too long and the flag shoots up.
