Notts County head coach Martin Paterson has said he needs to "change the culture" of the club following their disappointing start to the League Two season.

The Magpies lost 2-1 at home to Salford City on Saturday, meaning they have picked up just one point from their opening two fixtures.

The 38-year-old took charge of the club in June, replacing Stuart Maynard who was sacked following the play-off semi-final defeat by AFC Wimbledon.

"I think I have to be very careful with my words - the first half was so far away from our identity, it was untrue," Paterson told BBC Radio Nottingham after the defeat.

"I have to change the culture and the mentality and how we take them on."

Despite having 58 per cent of possession against Salford, County had fewer shots on target and shots in total than their opponents.

In an aim to turnaround the slow start, Paterson suggested he will be naming a full-strength side for County's Carabao Cup first-round tie at Wigan Athletic on Tuesday.

"I always think, if I'm a supporter, how I'm feeling after the game. If I'm being honest, I would be really, really frustrated," he said.

"I have to be accountable for that, I'm head coach, it's on me. When you dip from your levels of play, [as a] minimum at League Two you have to stay inside games.

"We concede two goals, that were probably the worst two goals that I have conceded [as a manager].

"We will be there to compete to win. I think we need to shake this idea that we are able to just mix the team up a little bit.

"We are approaching the game looking for an immediate reaction."
