Caldwell focused on improving 'naive' Exeter City

Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell says he and his staff will work to try and remove some of the 'naivety' around their play.

The Grecians conceded a late goal to lose 2-1 at Blackpool as their opponents' new manager Steve Bruce's tenure began with a win.

Caldwell says his side's inexperience cost them towards the end of the game:

"We make some poor, naive actions that allow them to get a flurry of corners and there were some great deliveries. Obviously they're much bigger and more experienced at that point than we are and we can't see the game out," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"So we have to learn from it. They're young players at the end of the game that we have to support and give them that understanding of what's needed at that moment and we'll do that in the coming weeks."

Caldwell was quick to praise the efforts of his side, who are 16th in the early League One table after two wins and three losses from five matches.

He feels his job now is to focus on making the improvements that will see them get back to winning ways after three losses in their past four games.

"We know we're always going to be a younger team in terms of our academy players coming through and we sign a lot of younger players as well," Caldwell said.

"I think we're down about fifth or sixth in terms of average age, which is not a negative for me, it's something that we always know we have to help the players.

"That's why I'm saying we need to support them. It's not through want of trying today, it's not through want of effort.

"I think these players are a fantastic group and it's my job and the staff's job to support them in these moments to make them better."
