Peterborough United have re-signed Stockport County defender Sam Hughes for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old, who made 19 appearances for Posh during a loan spell last season, has agreed a three-year contract.

He added stability to boss Darren Ferguson's defence in the second half of the League One campaign, enabling them to stave off the threat of relegation and finish 18th.

"It is still a young group that we have and he brings a lot of leadership qualities, but he is also a very good defender," Ferguson said.

"He has a good understanding of how we play, which is important, so I think he is a big signing for us. He is very vocal on the pitch and that will help the others.

"We have worked really hard to get it over the line and I am delighted."

Hughes, who joined Stockport from Burton Albion last summer, scored his only Peterborough goal so far in a 3-0 win over Charlton in March.

He is their second signing of the summer transfer window following winger Declan Frith, from Swiss club FC Thun.

Hughes said: "I know what the manager expects and I think I actually played some of the best football in my career when I was here last season, so hopefully that can continue.

"It is not just about playing games, I have come here to be successful."
