Beryly Lubala scored four as Wycombe Wanderers beat Brighton and Hove Albion’s Under-21 team 5-3 in the EFL Trophy.
The Chairboys had lost their opening group game at AFC Wimbledon but Congolese striker Lubala, with just 10 minutes of first-team action under his belt this season, bagged a hat-trick in the opening 36 minutes.
With Kieran Sadlier also on the scoresheet, Wycombe had the game won by half-time, although two Harry Howell penalties and a goal from Marcus Ifill, either side of Lubala’s fourth, gave the travelling fans something to cheer.
Stockport County eased into the knockout stages with a 4-0 win over Everton Under-21s, with their leading goalscorer in last season’s League Two title triumph, Isaac Olaofe, scoring twice. Jaydon Fevrier and Nick Powell also got on the scoresheet, with Omari Benjamin netting a consolation goal for the young Toffees.
Goals from Tayo Edun and Matty Godden gave Charlton Athletic a 2-1 win at Cambridge United, but the Addicks had Jamaica international Karoy Anderson sent off. Dan Nlundulu scored the Us’ goal from the penalty spot.
Sam Hornby saved a penalty from Fulham Under-21s’ Kristian Sekularac to help Walsall to a 1-0 win that saw them qualify for the knockout phase, with Danny Johnson’s goal proving the difference.
Bradford City won 3-0 away to League One side Mansfield Town, with Vadaine Oliver, 20-year-old striker Bobby Pointon and Clarke Oduor on the scoresheet.
Colchester United included 15-year-old Lennox Emery in their squad for their first game in the competition this season, against Milton Keynes Dons. The schoolboy did not get on, but the U's came from behind to win 2-1, with an Anthony Scully penalty and Fiacre Kelleher's goal replying to Stephen Wearne's headed opener.
An Oliver Greaves goal seven minutes from time gave Newport County their first win in this season’s competition, against West Ham United Under-21s.
