Barnsley defender Barry Cotter looks set to miss the League One run-in as he requires surgery on an ankle injury.
The 26-year-old, who sustained the injury at the turn of the year, will have an operation and is likely to miss the "majority of the season" according to manager Darrell Clarke.
"He's a great lad. He will keep his spirits high. He's great around the group and will bounce back," Clarke said., external
"Barry was coming back again, getting into good form. It's a big blow for us.
"We have Georgie [Gent] and Neil [Farrugia] at left wing-back so we have competition."
Centre-back Mael de Gevigney, who has been an ever-present for Barnsley, missed his first league game in 63 matches on Saturday and is a doubt for their midweek game against Wycombe, along with Farrugia who has a thigh injury.
Clarke added: "He [De Gevigney] is Mr Consistency. I love the kid to bits. He's professional every day, the way he plays, the way he performs. You're always going to miss a player of his calibre, but other players have to step up."
