Chesham United co-manager Michael Murray believes there is no reason why his side can not cause a famous FA Cup upset as they take on Lincoln City in the first round on Monday.

The Generals, who were promoted to the National League South last season, successfully saw off Yeovil Town 1-0 earlier this month to set up their tie with the Imps who sit three divisions above them.

"It's a really important week, obviously, for everyone top to bottom of the football club," Murray told BBC Three Counties Radio following Chesham's 3-2 victory over Enfield Town on Saturday.

"It’s a massive game but we are going to try and keep it as normal as we can in preparation and get ready for what is going to be a tough, tough fixture."

Chesham are perhaps best known for Taskmaster presenter Alex Horne being a fan and director of the club, as well as the hit Channel 4 show being the club's shirt sponsor for the 2022-23 season.

The Buckinghamshire-based outfit have taken to life in the sixth tier of English football well, currently sitting 10th in the league, just one point above the play-off positions.

"We want tough games and we’re going to attack that tough game," Murray added.

Chesham United knocked out then-League Two Bristol Rovers in the first round of the 2015-16 season.

Murray was appointed as Generals co-manager alongside James Duncan in October 2018 and last season helped guide the club to the Premier Division South championship after being knocked out of the promotion play-offs by Bracknell Town at the semi-final stage a season prior.

"I say it many times, and I say it about going into this league, we’re not going there just to make the numbers up or keep the score down- we’re going there to give a good account of ourselves," Murray added.

"We believe if we can give a good account of ourselves there’s no reason why we can’t get a result."

In 2015, Chesham caused a huge FA Cup shock when they won 1-0 at Bristol Rovers - who at the time sat 75 places above them in the football pyramid.

They will be now looking to go one better against League One Lincoln, who sit 76 places ahead of them.

"We’re going to need all the supporters, we’re going to need a big turnout on that Monday night," he said.

"Hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves and, if we do that, then who knows?”
