TNS beat Llangollen Town 16-0 to equal modern era Welsh record

The New Saints equalled the record for the biggest win in the modern era of the Welsh Cup proper, since qualifying rounds were introduced, by beating Llangollen Town 16-0.
Shrewsbury secured an emphatic 21-0 triumph over Mold Alyn Stars in the first round in 1894-95, although this was prior to the inception of qualifying rounds.
The first 16-goal record was set in 1883-84 when Davenham trounced Holywell Reserves.
Cardiff City also beat Knighton 16-0 in 1961 while, most recently, Bala Town beat Brymbo 17-1 in September 2021.
Larger margins of victories have been secured in the competition's qualifying rounds.
St Asaph City beat Rhyl Dragons 18-0 last season while Cardiff Airport defeated Aberystwyth Exiles by the same scoreline during the 2022-23 campaign.
Bodedern Athletic won 17-0 against fellow Anglesey side Gaerwen in 2022-23.
Craig Harrison’s side – whose next fixture is against Kazakhstan’s Astana in the Europa Conference League on Thursday – were 9-0 up at half-time, with Adam Wilson scoring a hat-trick before the break.
On-loan Bradford forward Wilson added to his tally after the interval for a total of four with Ryan Brobbel, Declan McManus, Danny Redmond and Ash Baker all scoring two each.
TNS’ defeat by Connah’s Quay Nomads in last year’s final was their first defeat in the competition in six years having won the previous three finals.
The Oswestry-based club are aiming to capture the trophy for a 10th occasion to equal the record of Swansea City.
The Welsh Cup is the third oldest football competition in the world having been first contested in 1877.
