Exeter City boss Gary Caldwell believes his squad are "way off the finished article" as they prepare to host winless Peterborough United on Saturday.

The Grecians have endured a mixed start to the League One season picking up two wins and three losses – one of which was a 2-0 loss at Northampton last weekend - but speaking ahead of Posh's visit, Caldwell remained optimistic that far more is to come from his side.

"We're a new team that's been put together so there's going to be some parts of our game we have to keep improving," said the former Celtic defender to BBC Radio Devon.

"We're early in the season and we know that we're way off the finished article. I think the good thing we have is a group of players that are willing, want to take information, want to train well and then take that into the game on Saturday.

"We want to get a better consistency to our performances and with that, hopefully more points come."

With four days left until the transfer window closes, Caldwell also revealed that he wants to increase "speed" higher up the pitch.

Exeter have already made nine additions that include Premier League loan deals for Joe Whitworth from Crystal Palace, Sil Swinkels from Aston Villa and Ethan Brierley from Brentford.

"I think everyone knows speed kills. It gives a second thought of how they're going to do that because you can play a different way and get one on one threat.

"We have some of that in the team, but I think we want more of that and more options to do that higher up the pitch. I'm sure we'll get something in before the end of the window."
