Ethan Wheatley has made three league appearances for parent club Manchester United

Northampton earned their first win of the season as they beat Exeter at Sixfields.

The result never looked in doubt once Ethan Wheatley and Max Dyche had given the home side a two-goal lead inside 16 minutes.

It took just 57 seconds for Northampton to score their first of the season from open play when Nesta Guinness-Walker released Wheatley and the young Manchester United loanee did the rest, shrugging off a defender and thumping into the top corner.

The home side were dominant early on and a second goal duly arrived on 16 minutes as a free-kick was only partially dealt with and Tyrese Fornah crossed for Dyche who side-footed home.

It could have got worse for Exeter with Cameron McGeehan poking into the side-netting and Fornah volleying wide before Wheatley miscued a free header early in the second half.

The visitors created little all game and only managed their first serious effort in the last minute when Ethan Brierley's volley was beaten away by Lee Burge.
