Torquay United have signed striker Matt Jay after his release by Colchester United.

The 28-year-old has signed a deal to keep him at Plainmoor until the summer of 2027.

Jay came up through the ranks at Exeter City and captained the Grecians as they won promotion to League One in 2022.

He scored 54 goals in 206 appearances for Exeter, including 36 in his final two full seasons at the club.

He left for Colchester in January 2023 for an undisclosed fee but scored just once in 35 league matches.

"MJ is someone who I've known about for years," Torquay United manager Paul Wotton told the club website.

"He brings a wealth of experience, and he has captained a League Two promotion-winning side.

"He's obviously got tremendous qualities as a football player, and he adds huge value and experience to the squad.

"He's a forward, we needed to sign some, and I can't wait to get working with him."
