Colchester United midfielder Teddy Bishop is hopeful the team can still "achieve something" this season after scoring his first goal for the club.
Bishop netted the equaliser as the U's came from behind to beat League Two leaders Walsall 2-1, a result capped by Owura Edwards' brilliant finish.
Having languished in the bottom half of League Two for most of the season, Colchester are now 11th after four wins and a draw in their last five games, leaving them only eight points short of the play-off places.
"The manager has talked a lot about the fans suffering over the last few years but he also said it's a different squad now and we want to make right what hasn't been so good for Colchester in recent years," Bishop told BBC Essex Sport.
"It's just the start for us. We haven't got too much time left but we're quietly confident we can possibly achieve something.
"It's just (about) taking it game by game, keeping winning, getting good results with good performances, and who knows where it will take us."
Bishop said he was proud of the way they recovered from falling behind, with his goal coming just four minutes after Walsall had taken the lead.
"Maybe in the last few years, as Colchester, we might have laid down and died but we still believed and were just buzzing to get the win," he said.
"We thought we were better than them first half so we weren't too deflated, we knew we'd get chances. I think we almost switched the tempo after they scored - it seemed to wake us up a little bit, which obviously shouldn't be the case, but it was great to respond like that.
"It just came to me on the edge of the box, I shot and luckily it went in. I have had so many near-goals this season, it's about time I start getting some and repaying the manager."
Bishop joined Colchester from League One side Lincoln City last summer and has made 23 appearances but said it has taken him time to settle - a situation not helped by an injury which kept him out throughout October and November.
The 28-year-old added: "It's taken me a little bit of time to get used to League Two and that might sound strange coming from playing higher but it is like a different game.
"There's people everywhere, not as much structure, it's a bit crazy and when I was finding my feet earlier in the season I got my ankle injury and was out for 10 weeks, so I almost had to start again.
"But I feel my performances have got better and better in the last two months so I just need to keep going."
