Doncaster Rovers defender Richard Wood is set to miss the next 12 weeks after undergoing an ankle operation.
The 39-year-old has not featured since August but had been close to a return when he suffered a recurrence of the injury.
"He's tried to come back and it's still niggling away at him. We're all gutted because he was close to returning but it just wasn't right," boss Grant McCann told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"Hopefully he can help us towards the end of the season."
