Jaze Kabia scrambled home the winner for Truro City against Maidstone United

Truro City manager John Askey said he "aged 20 years" as his side scored a last-gasp winner to beat Maidstone United.

Having led 1-0 from the 20th minute, Maidstone levelled with six minutes remaining before Jaze Kabia forced Will Dean's free-kick over the line.

But the goal was not immediately awarded as the referee waved play on, failing to notice his linesman flagging for the goal.

"I aged about 20 years watching that but I'm really pleased to get our first win," Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"The referee didn’t see the linesman put his flag up. But it had clearly gone over the line. So the game carried on until the referee saw his linesman. And luckily for us they made the right decision."

The goal gave Askey his first win as Truro manager in National League South, having been appointed in June.

"Maidstone are a big club for this league," he said. "None of us are getting carried away but it’s a good start and the players will enjoy that."

Truro's next league fixture is away against Salisbury on Tuesday night.
