John Askey is targeting another promotion to the National League

John Askey says his Truro City side have already exceeded expectations this season but urged them not to ease up as they can still challenge to win the league.

After living a nomadic existence for almost four years, Truro resumed playing in Cornwall last summer, and their return has coincided with a surprise promotion push.

The Tinners head into the final 14 games of the regular season sixth in the National League South but only eight points behind leaders Dorking Wanderers with two games in hand.

Askey, who was appointed in June 2024, told BBC Radio Cornwall: "It's important coming back to Truro in front of their own support that we had a decent season.

"I don't think any of us at the start of the season thought we'd do as well as we have done.

"When I spoke to the powers that be at the start of the season, they were saying, 'Well, if we could stay up and get mid-table, everybody would be happy'.

"But the players have worked really hard, and the players we have brought in have improved us. It's gone well so far.

"But we do need to finish the season off strongly. Nobody is getting complacent and we're not happy with finishing just outside the play-offs. We want to push on and even push for the top spot."

Truro hosts 16th-placed Slough Town tomorrow, a side Askey described as "unpredictable", with their 4-0 win against fourth-placed Worthing last Saturday an example of what they are capable of.

The game marks the start of a busy period of six matches in three weeks for Truro.

Askey said: "It's obviously a really important time. Hopefully we can get through the games with not too many injuries and suspensions.

"If we could do that, then we stand a great chance of getting into the play-offs or, even, it's tight enough for us to think about getting top spot.

"For the play-off places, there are eight teams fighting for those positions.

"Hopefully before the end of the season somebody loses form - not us - and it makes it a little bit easier coming towards the end of the season.

"It's important you finish as high as you can because if you don't get the top spot, to finish second or third is important because it means home advantage and less games in the play-offs."
