Relegated Shrewsbury Town made it 14 games without a win as Wigan Athletic triumphed for their boss Ryan Lowe on his return to Shropshire.

Following confirmation of their relegation back to League Two just minutes before they kicked off, thanks to Burton's draw at Exeter, Dale Taylor's second-half Wigan winner rubbed salt into their wounds.

The visitors had the first big chance when Jamal Blackman saved from Jon Mellish, who then also rattled the outside of the post.

But Town defender George Nurse did test Wigan keeper Sam Tickle with a free-kick close to half-time before Latcis matchwinner Taylor had a goal ruled out for offside in first-half stoppage-time.

Taylor's winner came 19 minutes from time when he stroked home from Maleace Asamoah's pass after he drove into the box.

But Latics keeper Tickle then produced a good save in the final 10 minutes to keep Callum Stewart out from an acute angle.

And Shrewsbury wing-back Mal Benning, who nodded over late on, could only fire straight at Tickle right at the end.

But the Latics held on for their first win in seven matches - and their first since former Shrewsbury favourite Lowe took charge a month ago, having drawn four of his first five games.
