Wrexham are 14 points behind League One leaders Birmingham while Bolton are 22 points adrift of top spot
Promotion challengers Wrexham and Bolton Wanderers held each other to a tense goalless draw at Stok Racecourse in League One.
Ahead of the rest of the day's encounters, both sides had the chance to make headway at the top of the division.
However, neither goalkeeper was regularly tested, with a glut of chances missing the mark at both ends.
Jack Marriot almost won it for the Welsh side with three minutes left, but his low effort went narrowly wide having got in behind the Wanderers defence.
And there was still time to Aaron Collins to almost win it for Bolton, but Arthur Okonkwo's excellent save kept the game goalless.
The other lunchtime kick-off saw League One leaders Birmingham beat second place Wycombe Wanderers at St Andrews Stadium.
As a result Wrexham's draw means they fail to draw level on points with Wycombe in second, remaining two points adrift in third.
Bolton meanwhile climb one place to sixth and into the League One play-off places, ahead of Leyton Orient and Charlton by one point.
Wrexham assistant manager Steve Parkin:
"We're a little frustrated. We wanted to get a good performance out of the lives today, which we did against the team that's been doing really well before it was a big, top-end league game, which we were looking forward to.
"We've done quite a lot of work with the lads, on maybe just getting a little bit more pressure on the opposition, which we've not been necessarily doing as well as we could over the last few weeks.
"And I think we did that really well and we had a spell second half, in the context of the game where three or four chances, certainly a couple, where you'd expect to score and probably go on to win the game.
"So, delighted with the way they played, certainly in the second half, but a little bit frustrated we didn't win the game."
