Viviane Asseyi scored as West Ham beat Leicester City to claim a first win in the Women’s Super League since February.
Asseyi rounded Leicester goalkeeper Janina Leitzig and slotted into the empty net in the seventh minute of first-half injury-time, ending her side's winless run in the WSL at 15 games.
West Ham were the better side in the opening 45 minutes, with Katrina Gorry running the midfield and Riko Ueki threatening with runs in behind the defence.
The breakthrough came when Ueki dropped deep in the build-up, creating space for Asseyi to run into and latch on to Manuela Pavi's well-timed through ball.
Ueki spurned a great chance when bearing down on goal midway through the second half but she stumbled under a challenge and saw her tame effort saved.
Victory moves West Ham level with Leicester on five points after seven games, although Amandine Miquel's side remain ahead on goal difference.
Leicester pushed for an equaliser during the final stages but Rehanne Skinner's side held out, having conceded an injury-time winner at Tottenham last weekend.
West Ham will next travel to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday while Leicester, who have scored just twice this season, will host Manchester United on 17 November.
Hammers heed Skinner's warning
"We have to put it behind us and move forward. Everybody is motivated to go and put that right this weekend. We want to be more attack-minded and positive on the ball."
Those were the words of West Ham boss Skinner after her side lost in bizarre circumstances last weekend.
The Hammers had led Tottenham Hotspur at Brisbane Road, but Camila Saez's own goal - a lob over her own goalkeeper in the 92nd minute - condemned them to a 2-1 defeat and extended their winless run in the WSL to 15 games.
Skinner's players clearly listened to her - their performance against Leicester was more impressive than the scoreline suggests, while they registered a season-best six shots on target.
With Ueki, Asseyi and Gorry in their squad, West Ham have far too much quality to be lingering near the bottom of the table.
Before Sunday's game, Skinner stressed the importance of "getting over the line" in search of a first league win since February.
Now that her side are off the mark, the challenge is to build momentum and push up the table.
