Match Facts

  • This is the first ever European meeting between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Lyon - Maccabi last met a French side in major European competition in the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League, winning home (1-0) and away (2-1) against Bordeaux in the group stage.

  • Lyon's last major European meeting with an Israeli team came in the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League, when they beat Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona both at home (2-0) and away from home (4-3) in the group stage.

  • Maccabi Tel Aviv have lost 10 of their last 13 major European matches (W2 D1), including nine out of 12 in the UEFA Europa League in that time. In the last two seasons, only Nice have lost as many games as Tel Aviv (9 each).

  • Lyon lost 2-0 to Real Betis last time out in the UEFA Europa League, but manager Paulo Fonseca has not suffered consecutive UEFA Europa League defeats since losing both legs of the 2015-16 quarter-final to Shakhtar Donetsk as the Sporting Braga manager. This will be his 42nd game since then.

  • Lyon's Moussa Niakhaté ranks top for ball carries in this season's UEFA Europa League (107) and is second for ball carry distance (1,116m). He also ranks second for successful passes (338) behind Dinamo Zagreb's Scott McKenna (356).
