The draw sees Derry City slip to third in the table

Derry City slipped to third in the League of Ireland Premier Division table after being held to a 1-1 draw with champions Shelbourne at Brandywell.

Adam O'Reilly gave the home side the lead late in the first half before Ademipo Odubeko levelled early in the second.

The Candystripes trail second-place Bohemians on goal difference.

Shelbourne move up to fourth with the point, seven adrift of Derry but with two games in hand.

The top three sides in the Premier Division will qualify for European competitions next season.

Both sides will travel to face Drogheda United next, with Shels heading there on Monday night before Derry make the trip next Friday night.

Game of few chances

In a game of few chances, it was Derry City who almost took the lead on 25 minutes when Michael Duffy's cross from the right was met by the head of Jamie Stott on the edge of the penalty area, but he could only head over the bar.

Derry hit the front on 40 minutes, when brilliant hold-up play from Dipo Akinyemi created the chance for O'Reilly, who delightfully chipped the ball over Wessel Speel for his fourth goal in as many games.

Shelbourne thought they had equalised in first half injury time when Ali Coote's initial effort was saved by Brian Maher. Coote looked set to tap into the empty net, but Sam Todd showed remarkable powers of recovery to slide in and clear the ball off the goalline.

Shelbourne equalised on 54 minutes. Maher was on hand to stop Kerr McInroy's initial effort, but could do nothing to stop Odubeko's follow-up.

Neither side threatened for the rest of the half, with the game petering out in the closing stages.

The reigning champions remain unbeaten under new manager Joey O'Brien, with their last league defeat coming against Derry City at Tolka Park on 20 June.
