Jordan Pickford hopes he will be appreciated for his England achievements as he targets success at his fourth major tournament.

The goalkeeper - winner of Everton's player of the season award for a third successive campaign in 2023-24 - believes his best is yet to come.

"It's 61 caps now for me. I work hard off the pitch and on the pitch I do everything right to the best of my ability," Pickford said.

"I'm 30 now and I keep improving every day. If there's anything I can learn, I want to keep trying my best to improve. That's what keeps me pushing.

"That's why it's my fourth major tournament. That's why I have won Everton's player of the year for the last three seasons.

"I know what I'm doing and I know I keep getting better. Hopefully I'm appreciated and hopefully this tournament is a success."

England manager Gareth Southgate has been speaking to BBC Sport before the Three Lions get their Euros campaign under way. Here is what he had to say.

On leading England at a major tournament: "I had four as a player as well so I've had a lot of experience at major tournaments. I think you need to recognise things are never straight forward, we plan on being here for another 30-odd days and some of those will be lovely days with good training and no issues. Other days will have more turbulence. There's lots of aspects of tournaments I think experience can help us with definitely."

Reflecting on Euro 2020 final: "I don't now. For me, it's an irrelevance. Whatever reputations we have, whatever history we have, we have to deliver for the next month. It's good that we've got players who have been through all of that but equally we have to prove it everyday."

Changes to the squad: "I didn't necessarily expect that two or three months ago but we've had physical issues with some of the players and some young players who have played exceptionally well this season and deserve an opportunity. We have lost some experience from the group, different bonding process going on as they get to know each other. There's also an energy and a fearlessness as they start to arrive which is also adding something different."

Do England have to win? "I personally know the consequences of not doing that but I also have to remind everybody this is still a young group of players. My job is to protect them and allow them to perform but expectation has risen. My job is to guide the players through whatever the beginning of the tournament might throw up.

"It's a privilege to lead your country into a tournament. I felt that going to Russia, I feel that now. To be at Newcastle before the tournament reminded me of Bobby Robson and how he spoke about the privileges of the job. You can never hear too many of those sorts of things as a manager because it does remind you of why you do it. The great privilege that it is."

  5. Police will 'intervene rigorously' if fans are 'looking for a fight'published at 18:40 15 June

England v Serbia (Sun, 20:00 BST)

Gelsenkirchen Police has warned fans from England and Serbia it will look to "intervene rigorously" if it identifies any trouble-makers "looking for a fight" before the two teams meet in the city tomorrow.

Chief Superintendent Peter Both said the local authorities were “very well prepared” for the game and they were “looking forward to a hopefully exciting game of football, and above all, however, to enthusiastic, peaceful fans.

"We will be doing everything to ensure safety and security around the match and can be spoken to on the ground at any time" he said.

"Preparations for the tournament have been going on for months, especially for the first game in Gelsenkirchen, in order to ensure fans and visitors from all over the world the greatest possible safety and security during their stay."

German authorities have deemed England’s opening Euro 2024 matchagainst Serbia to be "high-risk" with local police previously voicing concerns that 500 Serbian hooligans could be among several thousand supporters from the country expected to attend the match.

Only low-alcohol beer will be served at the stadium, and fans from the two countries will be kept apart, with more than 1,000 police officers on duty as part of a major security operation.

In their latest statement, Gelsenkirchen police said: "the overwhelming majority of the tens of thousands of football fans are coming to see the game and to have a good time. However, the possibility cannot be ruled out that among them will be people looking for a fight.

"The police will attempt to spot these at an early stage and then intervene rigorously," said Both.

  6. Who else is in England's group?published at 18:38 15 June

After their opening match on Sunday against Serbia they will face Denmark on Thursday 20 June (17:00 BST) then Slovenia on 25 June (20:00 BST).

If England top Group C, they will face one of the third-placed teams from Group D, E or F in the last 16.

The biggest thing I can say about Jarrod Bowen and Declan Rice is they’re both brilliant lads, both very humble in how they go about their work.

Whatever they get, they deserve because of the work they’ve put in through their career.

Jarrod’s had a different route from Declan but both of them have come from young men, Jarrod especially from Hereford to Hull, to the Premier League and now to be an England player.

Declan as well, he lived away from Chelsea as a young boy, went to West Ham and fought his way through to become a superstar and he looks like being a future England captain.

  9. 'It's about how England set up'published at 18:32 15 June

England v Serbia (Sun, 20:00 BST)

    Micah Richards
Former Manchester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

From an England point of view, it’s how they set up. There’s been reports of Trent Alexander Arnold playing in midfield. Kieran Trippier playing left back. Who’s going to be playing on the right? Is it going to be Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer? I think it’s good we’ve got strength in depth but we need a plan and we need to stick to the plan to settle the nerve and so the confidence builds.

There’s a couple of problem positions, I think that centre midfield - the rise of Kobbie Mainoo he’s playing so well you have to get him in there. You’ve got Connor Gallagher who can play more like an 8 or 10, also could play in a number 6.

Declan Rice has been playing an 8 for Arsenal. All these players are emerging but not particularly in the right position. So it’s about getting the balance right. We know what Trent Alexander-Arnold can do on the ball. His passing is unbelievable. We have to be careful off the ball, tactically if he’s chosen. I’m sure as the tournament grows we’ll find out.

A lot of people have been talking about Jude Bellingham playing as a number 10 as he does for Real Madrid. But for me I would put him a bit deeper. I would go with Rice and Bellingham as two 6s and Foden as number 10. That would be my pick for the midfield. It’s got absolutely everything. Pace, power, tactical awareness, good on the ball, goals, work rate. That’s what I would go with.

  10. Stones fit after 'fractured toe' scarepublished at 18:30 15 June

England defender John Stones said earlier this week he was worried he had broken his toe but is ready to go on Sunday after injury and illness.

The 30-year-old Manchester City centre-back came off at half-time in the 1-0 friendly defeat by Iceland last Friday.

Stones - a guaranteed starter for England if available - then missed training in Germany on Wednesday through illness.

On the injury he suffered against Iceland, he said: "It was almost like my big toe in the line straight down my foot and you think 'I have fractured it'.

"You think the worst at the start and we got some scans back and [it was] really minor stuff and came through it, which is great."

  11. England defence 'not as big an issue as it might appear'published at 18:28 15 June

England v Serbia (Sun, 20:00 BST)

    Joe Hart column graphic

England's defence is one of the main talking points before we face Serbia, but I don't see it being as big an issue at Euro 2024 as it might appear.

I know there are doubts about our strength at the back, with Harry Maguire’s absence from the tournament meaning Marc Guehi is set to partner John Stones in our first game in Group C on Sunday.

People will say it is a new centre-half pairing because they have only played together twice before - for a total of 128 minutes - in a 4-0 defeat by Hungary in 2022, then for the first half of last week’s friendly loss to Iceland.

But inside the England camp there will be no concerns - I was in enough squads in my career to know that they will be ready.

The way teams are selected at club level these days, modern centre-halves are used to having different defensive partners. Last season at Celtic, for example, we changed our personnel all the time without altering our system or affecting our results, and the same applies across the back four.

I would imagine Gareth Southgate will set things up so whoever plays it won't matter. That way each player can bring their own individual qualities to their position, but the team will always be well organised.

England's campaign may be yet to get under way but Euro 2024 is already in full swing and hosts Germany got off to a dream start on Friday with a 5-1 thrashing of Scotland in Munich.

Switzerland beat Hungary 3-1 at the Cologne Stadium earlier today in Group B while Spain are currently taking on Croatia in that group's other match.

Manager Gareth Southgate said earlier this week Euro 2024 could be his "last chance" to win a trophy with England.

The 53-year-old has been in charge since 2016, taking his side to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar.

His contract is due to expire in December but the Football Association are keen for him to remain as manager for the next World Cup in 2026 in USA, Canada and Mexico.

Southgate told German newspaper Bild, external that failure to win a trophy in Germany could see the end of his stay.

"If we don't win, I probably won't be here anymore. Then it might be the last chance," he said.

"If we want to be a big team and I want to be a top coach, then you have to deliver in the big moments."

What do you think folks? Should Southgate go if England miss out? Should he stick around if they win? Or is the Southgate era over regardless of the result?
