Melchie Dumornay punished Arsenal errors with a double strike as Lyon beat the Champions League holders at Meadow Park in the first round of league phase games.

These sides played each other in the semi-finals last season, when Arsenal won 5-3 on aggregate after both sides posted away wins.

Arsenal, looking to end the trend of victories by travelling sides, made a fast start and scored with their opening chance in the seventh minute.

But Dumornay turned the game as she scored twice in five minutes after taking advantage of loose passing in the Arsenal backline.

Arsenal pushed for an equaliser but could not find a breakthrough and are now winless in their latest four matches.

The Gunners will aim to stop this winless run when they host Brighton at Emirates Stadium in the WSL on Sunday at 14.30 BST.

They then travel to Benfica in the Champions League on Thursday, 16 October.

Leah Williamson will play those cut-through passes through the heart of your team, which then gives you a front-foot momentum going forward with your midfield and frontline interchanging, and that causes a different problem for Lyon if she was in there playing those passes.

I think when you don't have a Leah Williamson, you need someone else who's able to do that. Sometimes Mariona is way too deep, and she can't contribute offensively because she's working tirelessly defensively and she's so low that when that transition ball does go high and up to Alessia Russo or Caitlin Foord or Chloe Kelly, it's coming right back at the team straight away, so she doesn't even have time to get up.

I think Arsenal really have to rejig and concentrate on how they build offensively in order to have that same possession higher up because the transition ball with Lyon, they're so effective because they have such fast players.

More from Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, speaking to Disney+ on whether Arsenal have a target on their back being the holders: "I think so. That's something we need to use as fuel. We know how hard we worked for that trophy and how it felt to win it. When you win a trophy with a team it lights a fire to want to win more because that feeling is like nothing else. It's a long season, it's hard graft but when you get moments like that it makes everything worth it. Although tonight didn't go to plan we'll keep pushing."

On whether Arsenal's poor start to the Champions League last season can inspire them to turn it around this year: "We have to be realistic. We know it's a long season ahead full of highs and lows. We definitely felt that last season in the Champions League. You can never get too high or too low. We've got to keep pushing ourselves because we don't like losing, we don't like being in moments like this."

I think Arsenal's frontline gave everything defensively but offensively were misfiring, not really a good final third ball, whether that was a cross or a shot or the last pass. It was lacking, so that's something they will definitely be thinking of working on and progressing further forward.

Alessia Russo scores a fantastic goal, and her work ethic tonight was unbelievable.

I do think the substitutions didn't make an impact in the game.

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, speaking to Disney+ "[We're] disappointed to not get the three points. I think at the moment we're in a bit of a blip but we're aware of that. I think at times tonight we saw what we're capable of but it's just about doing that and making sure we get results as well.

"I think there's lots to it. I think, first and foremost, we need to look at ourselves and how we can push our standards. We're sometimes letting teams get attacks on us by our own mistakes. We need to take accountability, we need to focus on what we can do to control that from everyone, it's all across the pitch. There's moments in that that were really positive so we'll lean on that and get ready for Sunday.

On whether rotation of teammates makes it tough as a striker: "It's tough but we have so many different quality players, it's just about adapting to them in training. They all have different strengths which makes us hard to beat and hard to break down. You've got to adapt the game to different players and work to their strengths and vice versa."

There is a pattern. I still think it's small margins. I think that game could've gone either way. If the mistake from the goalkeeper doesn't happen, then do Arsenal continue to progress? They were 1-0 up and I thought they looked pretty comfortable.

As soon as that mistake happened then Lyon gained confidence and momentum and Arsenal struggled to get a foothold in the game.

It is small margins and it's in both boxes. It's making sure defensively you're sound and don't make mistakes, and then in the final third, can you have a little more equality when the ball comes in? I thought Russo was outstanding, and when she went off, they lost somebody who holds the ball up and links the play, which isn't Blackstenius' game.

It's the small margins from an Arsenal perspective that they need to tighten up.

Tonight was Kim Little's 78th Champions League game for Arsenal. She overtakes Emma Byrne to become the club's record appearance maker in the competition.

Arsenal captain Kim Little, speaking to Disney+: "Firstly, not the result we wanted. We wanted to come away with something from this match to start our Champions League campaign off. I do think there are lots of great positives to take, especially after our previous performances in the league. We obviously made mistakes in the start of the game but I think we showed a lot of resilience to stick in it and create opportunities until the end. Ultimately we are disappointed."

On the messages she is now giving to the team: "Renee has spoken to us there [in the huddle], we keep going and working together. It can't always be perfect all of the time. We're in a lower space just now with the current form but we'll come back stronger. We go into our league fixture at the weekend for a big three points."

On the league phase being different: "It's a different format playing six different teams and with that comes a cup final in every match. Now it's just all in for all the games. It's a slightly different way of playing. We look forward to playing Benfica in our next match."

Leah Williamson is currently out with a knee injury, and Arsenal manager Renee Slegers is hopeful she will be back fit before Christmas.

She will need the Gunners to find their form well before Williamson is back in the team.

I think Arsenal are masters of their own downfall in the first half. They can't make two mistakes like they did. Van Domselaar tries to play a one-two with Catley, and Dumornay takes the ball and scores.

Van Domselaar is again trying to play into midfield with Mariona facing her own goal.

Lyon's backline made many mistakes but Arsenal couldn't capitalise on them, whereas when Arsenal's backline made mistakes, Lyon capitalised and scored the goals.

Maybe you could've said Arsenal could be more decisive when they did go forward but it was a difficult night for their forwards, especially with the type of goals they were receiving from deep. They didn't really play through the midfield into the forward line on the floor, and when they did, it was in the first 20 minutes of the first half.

This was the 10th meeting between these sides. Lyon have now won seven of them, and are still unbeaten in London against Arsenal - indeed, they have never lost away to an English club in this competition.

A measure of revenge for them following their stunning loss in the semi-finals last season.

Arsenal keeper Daphne van Domselaar made nine saves tonight, she prevented the score line being more lopsided.

But her error for the first goal proved decisive in the direction of this game's momentum, and it will spark more questions about her place in the Gunners XI.

I think you have to say that Lyon were deserved winners. Arsenal were better in the second half but just not good enough. I just think their ball retention was poor throughout the 90 minutes. When you cannot connect passes to get from front to back, however you do it, it really reduces the chances of getting a goal.

A better second half from Arsenal but the errors, you cannot have errors at this level and not expect to be punished. They tried and tried, they huffed and puffed towards the end of the second half, but Lyon had it under control.

I think there will certainly be positives from it. In the first 20/25 minutes, they started the game, the goal that they scored, but it is fine margins. And if you make a couple of errors against a top-quality side like Lyon, then they will punish you.

In the final third, they just needed to be a bit better, more clinical. But certainly positives to take.

Perhaps predictably, Lyon owner Michele Kang has made her way onto the pitch and was in the post-match huddle.
