It wasn't that long ago this might have been an evening where Burton Albion had already been relegated, were about to get relegated or were desperate for a win to avoid being, well, yes, relegated.

As it is they are all-but mathematically safe and while managers will tell you it's all about the players, for Burton the appointment of Gary Bowyer has been absolutely pivotal.

The Brewers were nine points adrift of safety when he replaced Mark Robinson in mid-December with only two league wins from their first 19 games.

Nine more wins and only nine defeats from their subsequent 25 matches means one point tonight will get them over the line but don't let Bowyer catch you talking about the job basically being already done.

"I remember Bristol Rovers needed to score seven goals from their last game of the season against Scunthorpe [to win promotion from League Two in 2022] and managed to do it," he told BBC Radio Derby.

"So I don't want to sound like a party pooper but it's my job to make sure we go about these next two games properly. Mathematically it's not done and until it's mathematically done, we've got to keep going."

At least a draw this evening will mean Bowyer and co can enjoy their final-day trip to Charlton.

Burton boss Gary Bowyer makes two changes from the side which beat Cambridge United at the weekend.

Into the side come Finn Delap (younger brother of Ipswich striker Liam) and Charlie Webster with JJ McKiernan suspended after his sending-off on Saturday and Kyran Lofthouse missing out.

Luke Robinson and Jason Kerr drop down to the bench for Wigan with Toby Sibbick and Jonny Smnith starting, as Ryan Lowe also makes a couple of alterations from the team which held Blackpool to a 1-1 draw.

It's a pretty simple equation for Burton this evening - at least a draw makes them mathematically safe and will confirm relegation for Bristol Rovers and Crawley Town.

Given the goal difference, even a couple of narrow defeats will surely be enough for the Brewers.

For Wigan it is ultimately about next season although two wins from their remaining games could give them a top-half finish which might be something to take from a pretty nondescript campaign.

League One's relegation issues could be sorted here tonight.

Burton need just one point to rubber stamp their place in League One for next season and condemn Crawley and Bristol Rovers to the drop, albeit mathematically those two are in a corner they are unlikely to escape.

For Wigan this is about getting to the end of the campaign and planning ahead.
