Let's leave you with this tale from Richard...

The time when Pele made me an Arsenal fan - meeting Pele as he has a film premiere and sat next to Liam Brady and Terry O'Neill.

They were fantastic and talked football all night. From that day I was Arsenal through and through.

  4. 'It is a journey that links generations'published at 14:28 British Summer Time

    Jonny Buchan
    BBC Radio Leeds sports editor

BBC Radio Leeds sports editor Jonathan Buchan credits Leeds United for his entire career:

"1995 was my first trip to Elland Road. My grandad Denis had been a season ticket holder for many years but ill health meant he could no longer go to games. As a result, I forced my dad, who is not a football fan, to take me and my mate on the half-mile or so walk down to the stadium.

"Personally, I owe a lot to that trip - a lifelong passion, friendships lasting decades... oh, and my entire career.

"Thirty years on from that first trip - a trip I have now made with my daughter and will do with my son - the journey to Elland Road is still my favourite to make. It is a journey that links generations.

Milo: I luckily get the chance to go and see the mighty Blues play once a year with my dad and sometimes my brother - every time feels magical.

The blue smoke, the crazy fans singing: 'it’s a grand old team' and the players walking out to Z-cars. That’s what makes the experience.

  9. 'We lost - and I learned what it meant to support West Ham'published at 14:09 British Summer Time

    West Ham United

An old photo of young mascots with captains and officials at a West Ham game

Tim: I'm Barnsley-born but started supporting West Ham purely because my older brother's best friend played Subbuteo with a West Ham team - and he only did that because of the colours.

I looked up to him so I decided I'd support West Ham. By the time I was 10, my family had arranged for me to be mascot for West Ham in 1987 against Barnsley at Oakwell. I'll not forget the night meeting John Lyall and the first team, nor will I forget the subsequent loss at Upton Park in the second leg.

My school was ready for me the next day with 'Underdogs' written on the blackboard and my classmates laughing at me. I quickly learned what it meant to be West Ham.

  10. Mabbutt's secret letter-writing pastpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time

Not just Tom shouting out Gary Mabbutt for his letters to diabetic fans.

Nigel: The Gary Mabbutt story gave me a massive flashback (13:47 BST) as I also got a letter as a type 1 diabetic from Bristol.

However, as a Bristol *City* fan, Gary wasn't on my list of favourite people (he played 131 times for Bristol Rovers) - but I forgave him as he was then at Spurs.

    What a lovely guy!

Love for our clubs is at the heart of all your stories. Like Anna, whose affection for former Leeds centre-back Gordon McQueen helped her fall for the Whites.

Anna: Like many little girls in the 1970s, I watched on as my big brother played football, followed the 'big' team and even got given the shirt.

He lost interest - I didn't. I stayed a Leeds fan for life, through all the ups and the many downs.

I'm pretty sure it's made me who I am, as a woman and a writer. I'm not sure I want the world to know about my teen fan fiction in this picture though!

A man is on one knee proposing to a woman in Liverpool shirt at Anfield

Rosario: This is a picture of my boyfriend proposing to me in May 2024 while we were doing the Anfield Stadium Tour. That day was very special also because I finally got to see my Anfield Stone outside the stadium for the first time.

The ring is engraved with YNWA on the inside. It was an unforgettable trip - as I later got to attend Jurgen Klopp's last match, but I did it alone because my boyfriend went to London to see his beloved Arsenal!

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tom: I was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic aged seven in 1987.

My dad, a Bristol Rovers fan, knew of Gary being diabetic and watched his dad Ray Mabbutt play for Rovers.

My dad wrote to Gary telling him about me, and Gary sent me a letter back asking me to never let diabetes stop me doing whatever I wanted in life.

Included in the letter were two tickets to a match, and tickets to meet him and the other players in the players' lounge after the game. See the below photo.

Spurs lost 2-0 that day but I've followed every game since.

  18. Clubs 'more than scores and numbers'published at 13:38 British Summer Time

    Wolves

Our club pages are also a trove of wisdom from our army of reporters stationed all around the country.

BBC Radio WM's Mike Taylor has been reflected on what he's seen in his years covering Wolves for local radio..

    Wolves microphones and press box

"Listening on the concourses, you are reminded that football clubs are so much more than scores and numbers," Taylor says.

"They are a community, drawn apparently at random from all classes and generations, united by one devotion. Like all relationships, it goes through times of strain - and faith can be tested - but the love remains."

Think we can all relate to that!

There are psychological processes at work and physiological ones in terms of how we respond and engage with football and our clubs.

An example that I always give is when I take the train to work, I go past Arsenal's stadium and I feel literally nothing other than 'oh, that's a big building'. Whereas on a train to Manchester, I went by Villa Park and my heart started pounding. I got all excited and was trying to take pictures out the window.

I had a visceral reaction to this place. We can't pretend we don't have that sort of physical reaction because we do.

When someone is talking about a controversial decision and I feel myself getting wound up, even though I intellectually know that I can't control it and it's outside of my sphere of influence, that it's just a game, my body doesn't know that.

My gut doesn't know that, and so I have this really emotional response and we can't control that.
