Hooper was consistent in being lenient throughout the game. Lots of things both sides could have been yellows, even the red he originally gave as yellow. Correctly overruled by VAR when needed - all the officials did their job and it enabled such an entertaining game.

  2. 'My intentions were pure' - Gordon apologises for red cardpublished at 10:08 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Anthony Gordon, who will now be suspended for the Magpies' next three matches, has posted an apology to his Newcastle team-mates and fans on his Instagram, external story.

The England forward also apologised directly to Virgil van Dijk, who had clear stud marks visible down his calf as a result of the challenge.

The message read: "I want to sincerely apologise to my team-mates and the fans. My intentions were pure. I was just trying to create energy in the game and I mistimed the tackle.

"I also want to apologise to Virgil. I would never intend to tackle somebody like this on purpose. We spoke after and he knows that.

"More importantly, I'm so proud of the time I spent on the pitch and how we played. The atmosphere from you all is what makes St James' Park so special.

"I love everything we stand for as a club and no more than right now. I'll be back and better, the same as every other setback I've ever faced. See you soon."

Blimey, any more shouts on who should have been sent off last night?

Can someone edit me a Royal Rumble style image please featuring Newcastle and Liverpool players?

Dan Burn should have been sent off for 2 tackles in the space of 30 seconds on Salah. Newcastle were incredibly lucky that the ref apparently didn't actually want to punish any of their players! Bruno should have absolutely been shown a second yellow as well.

Is everyone going to ignore the two yellow card fouls in the space of 10 seconds from Dan Burn on Salah? Newcastle United to win of there was a PL Wrestlemania!

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC MOTD about Anthony Gordon's red card: "I've only seen it once back and it was very quick as the game was going on. I think Anthony was going in full blooded into the challenge and he's tried to pull out and slipped and his momentums taken him in. It didn't look good but I don't think there was any intent."

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer wasn't best pleased with Anthony Gordon's lunging tackle that saw him sent off on Monday evening.

On his X account, he wrote: "What a stupid challenge man. It’s a red card all day."

There were also a few of those red faced emojis shouting expletives included, for those interested.

If you actually watch Gravenberch's tackle, he barely touches Joelinton, don't know why all the Newcastle fans are crying about it... you got away with plenty in that game before Gordon's red...

    Sophie

Guimaraes committed 2 yellow card worthy challenges whilst already on a yellow and Joelinton kicked someone in the face without a booking. The same people who think Gravenberch's tackle was worth a red will also say Gordon's wasn't. Konate however was lucky to not have been sent off.

    Josh, Liverpool

In the first 20 minutes there was dangerous high tackle and at least 3 fouls by Trippier but not one of them received a card. Not much mention of those either.

On how Anthony Gordon's red card in first-half stoppage time cost Newcastle:

I don’t think he intended to hurt Virgil van Dijk but all day long, even in real time, it look like a naughty challenge and deserved a red card.

If he keeps his head there and they go into the second half downhill with equal men then you would think they [Newcastle] would get back in the game and go on and win it.

For the players on the field, they did superb, it was admirable, but they didn’t and it is still three points lost.

  9. 'I think Gordon wanted to help too much'published at 09:35 British Summer Time

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, speaking to Sky Sports, on Anthony Gordon's red card: "I think he wanted to help too much. I think sometimes you are so excited to play you make some mistakes.

"It's happened to me. We always try to give our best. There is a lot of noise outside that we cannot control."

Definitely seen a bit of debate around the Gravenberch one since yesterday evening.

Do you think the Liverpool midfielder was lucky with his challenge?

Little thumbs vote before we go back into Gordon's dismissal if you will...

Thumbs up if you think Gravenberch should have seen red, thumbs down if no.

How is the Gravenberch challenge or the Konate push not getting more traction? Both should have been sent off. Newcastle win this game with a striker on the pitch. Liverpool look weaker than last year. Kerkez looks lightweight.

    Matt, Hull

Haven't seen much discussion of Gravenberch's reckless scissor tackle, but I think if it had been later in the game rather than the 8th minute, he'd have been sent off too.

  12. Watch: Gordon 'full-blooded' in Van Dijk challenge - Howepublished at 09:20 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says that England forward Anthony Gordon went in "full-blooded" but there was no "intent" when he was sent off for his challenge on Virgil van Dijk in their 3-2 loss to Liverpool at St James' Park.

The sending off meant Newcastle had to play a large portion of the game with 10 men against last year's Premier League winners.

There have been 17 red cards in Premier League games between Newcastle and Liverpool, with only Everton v Liverpool (25) and Liverpool v Man Utd (18) seeing more.

  14. 'One of the worst performances from a winning team'published at 09:09 British Summer Time

    Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender on Sky Sports

I think what we have seen tonight is probably one of the worst performances from a winning team, and one of the best from the losing team.

Liverpool won't care right now, they'll be absolutely ecstatic [with the win] but Eddie Howe's men tonight were absolutely outstanding.

I actually fear what the score would have been if it was 11 v 11. To put in that performance with 10 men, I think Liverpool would have won the game, they were far better in every aspect.

We all love to see pride & passion in the Newcastle shirt, but that alone will not win us these big games. We need to be cleverer and use the ball better, and oh yes, take our chances. The fact we don’t have a striker is on the club.

    Steve, Murray

It's all well and good saying Newcastle played well but not until being 2-0 down. Gordon was reckless and lacking discipline. We're struggling to sign players and we'll struggle in the Champions League.

  16. Newcastle analysis: Heartbreak for battling hostspublished at 09:00 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

    Ciaran Kelly
    Football reporter

Newcastle had just suffered a painful defeat right at the death - only you would not have known it. Not by the standing ovation the Geordies afforded their exhausted side at full-time.

Newcastle had run the champions mighty close - and the home support recognised that.

After going 2-0 down and with Gordon dismissed, it had previously felt a long way back for the 10 men. The away end even felt emboldened enough to chant about Isak as they asked Newcastle to "hand him over".

    Yet the spirited hosts rallied.

Guimaraes' header reignited the stadium as the captain waved his arms up and down and whipped up the fans after pulling a goal back.

Suddenly it felt like Newcastle were playing with a man advantage at a raucous St James' Park as they swarmed Liverpool and made them retreat.

It has got to the stage where Gordon, a winger by trade, has been picked ahead of the Dane in attack. Yet Osula thought he had snatched a point for his side - only for Ngumoha to score a last-gasp winner.

It was a hammer blow for Newcastle, who will somehow have to regroup and lift themselves for a trip to Leeds United on Saturday - and Howe needs a breakthrough in his search for a striker.

Newcastle are actually playing really well; despite the lack of a striker. Based of these performances so far; you would guess any striker would simply solve Newcastle’s problems like that. I worry we may not actually sign a striker however. Will Osula it is!

  19. 'Special Howe more important than Isak'published at 08:47 British Summer Time

Newcastle manager Eddie HoweImage source, Getty Images

The manager is more important than [Alexander] Isak. What he [Eddie Howe] has done at that football club, he is a special, special manager and I'm not just talking about for Newcastle but in the Premier League.

The job he has done from where they were to where they are now, I'm not saying they are going to lose their manager but if we're talking about either the player or manager going, he is way more important than Isak.

  20. Fans' passion matched on the fieldpublished at 08:41 British Summer Time

    Newcastle 2-3 Liverpool

    Ciaran Kelly
    Football reporter

It was just a few months ago that Alexander Isak wrote himself into club folklore by scoring against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final to help end the club's 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy.

Yet it was Liverpool's fans who were singing about Isak this time around as the away end repeatedly urged Newcastle to "hand him over".

Isak was conspicuous by his absence once again, as the wantaway Swede - for whom Liverpool have had a £110m offer rejected - continues to train away from the rest of his Newcastle team-mates. Inevitably, this saga added a new dimension to the game.

It certainly did not feel like an early season fixture, as a result.

The Liverpool players were booed getting off the team bus. By the time the visitors made it out to inspect the pitch, there were Newcastle fans gathered to jeer them some more. When the champions' line-up was read out by the stadium announcer, a few minutes before kick-off, the cacophony of boos was deafening.

The passion of the home support was matched by the intensity Newcastle played with. Liverpool, tellingly, conceded seven fouls in the opening 20 minutes alone as they aggressively tried to keep the hosts back.
