  1. Maguire grateful for Southgate's trustpublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March

Harry Maguire thanked Southgate for the faith he's shown in him for continuing to select him for his country.

The defender, who was given his debut by Southgate in 2017, has remained a regular for England in recent times even when being left out of Manchester United's starting XI.

"I think I've been in every single squad I've been available for, I've played every competitive game that I've been available for," said the defender.

    "It gives me great confidence.

"There's loads of people out there now who probably don't think I should be in the squad. There's millions of people that think I should be.

"That's football and that's why it's such a great game because everyone has such a different opinion."

  4. Southgate a 'massive part' of England's improvementpublished at 19:34 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March

Harry Maguire says he's keen for Gareth Southgate to continue in his role as England boss.

Southgate took charge in 2017 and led England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, before finishing runners-up in the 2020 European Championships.

The former Middlesbrough manager has been linked with a move to Manchester United and his England contract expires in December.

But Maguire wants Southgate to extend his deal.

"Yes, definitely," said Maguire when asked whether he wanted Southgate to continue as England manager.

"I don't know what's going to happen after the Euros, I don't know if he knows what's going to happen.

"But I feel like what he's done from when he first took over this job to where we are at now, we've taken huge strides and he's a massive part of that."

  6. White situation is 'complicated'published at 19:29 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March

White's place in the England squad has been debated since he left the training camp at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

When Southgate was asked about White not being included in the squad in November of last year he said he "assumed" that White was available for selection but he "was behind a couple of others".

However, three months on from that squad announcement the messaging around White has changed from the England manager.

His ability to play right-back and centre-back would be more crucial than ever as Southgate can only name 23 players in his final squad for the Euros in Germany in the summer.

The situation is clearly complicated with the player maybe having feelings towards a lack of game time with England. He has made four England appearances, all in friendlies, and did not feature in the opening three games of Qatar before his exit.

White is a fierce competitor but the view around the player not caring about football or loving the game is not correct.

It is true that being a footballer is not his complete identity and he does like to do things not connected to football when he is not at training.

What is clear is that White is playing the best football of his career and with Reece James injured along with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier, the depth at full-back is not what it once was for Southgate.

  7. Does Ben White have an England future?published at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March

One player that won't feature this international break is Ben White.

Southgate revealed in a press conference earlier this week that he wanted to select White, but the Arsenal defender had made himself unavailable for selection.

White, who left the Qatar World Cup for 'personal reasons', hasn't played for his country since 2022.

Southgate, though, says the door is still open for White to make this summer's Euros squad.

  8. Southgate talking pointspublished at 19:25 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March

As in most England press conferences there's a lot of talking points and questions that can be put to Gareth Southgate and not all of them are to do with matters on the pitch.

The discussion of today is around the St George's Flag on the back of the new England home shirt and whether it should have been changed by Nike.

Southgate has been an excellent spokesperson for the FA on a number of off-the-field issues including Covid, taking the knee, racism in football, the war in Ukraine and lots more.

However, in recent camps he's gone into less detail about matters off the field. It will be interesting to see how he tackles the shirt issue, especially as this is the last camp before he names his training squad for the Euros and he would like to keep the talk on footballing matters.

Former England kit designer Craig Buglass on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It comes with a lot of responsibility [designing the shirt].

“I think what Nike have done is celebrate the St George’s Cross flag by introducing new colours to it.

“For me, it disrupts a little bit, gets conversation going and I actually really like it.

“When we were designing the England kits, what was really important for us was to move the designs on a little bit.

“It’s a little bit of a poisoned chalice when someone asks you to design the England kit. If your design is to tripped out then people complain and if it’s too simple then people complain.

“You’ve got to try to create future classics. Trust me, if we come back with the European Championship, there’s not going to be anyone complaining about that kit. It will go down in the history books.”

Former England winger John Barnes: "I didn’t even know there was a flag on the back anyway so I don’t know what the fuss is.

"I think there would be a different conversation to be had if you were going to change the Three Lions because that’s what England is.

"I wasn’t even aware there was a white and red cross on the back so, for me, it’s much ado about nothing.

"They’re not changing the colour of the shirt. The shirt is exactly the same.

"If there were different Lions or they weren’t going to be on there – for me – that would have been a proper debate to be had."

The design of England's home kit for this summer's European Championships has caused controversy in some quarters.

The kit, made by Nike, features a navy, light blue and purple St George's flag - in a move away from its traditional red on a white background.

After its release on Thursday, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak led the criticism of the kit.

"When it comes to our national flags, we shouldn't mess with them because they're a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they're perfect as they are," Sunak said.

Labour leader Keir Starmer said: "We just need to be proud of it. So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back."

But the FA have defended the design, saying England kits have regularly used different colours over the years.
