Former Aston Villa manager Carla Ward is set to join Emma Hayes' United States staff at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Hayes left Chelsea after 12 years at the end of the Women's Super League season to become head coach of the US women's national team.

Ward stepped down from her role as Villa manager at the same time, having previously told BBC Sport she found it difficult to balance being a WSL manager and a mother.

The two English coaches formed a strong friendship during their time in the WSL and with Hayes set to lead the US in her first major tournament this summer, she hopes Ward's expertise will provide a boost to the group.

Ward has been given a flexible role covering a range of areas including performance analysis and opposition scouting.

Everton found themselves 3-1 down to Sligo but encouragingly fought back to level their first pre-season outing of the summer.

As a Spurs fan, we definitely need a new striker. We've been linked with Jonathan David for a while now and he seems like he could be a cheaper option than the usual Isak/Toney talk. Would also like to see Dom Solanke come into the team. A new centre-back is also a priority, and if we could hijack the De Ligt deal, that would be great. Failing that I'd settle for Marc Guehi.

    Leicester City

Leicester fan, we need a new striker. Jamie Vardy is a true GOAT for us but won’t be playing every game. Also someone to replace Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is needed. Think then we’ll be able to give it a real go at survival - points deduction or not! Oh, and Maresca to fail at Chelsea would be the icing on the cake!

  12. Can Rangers reach new-look Champions League group stage?published at 12:47 British Summer Time 22 July

In case you missed it, Rangers will face either Dinamo Kyiv or Partizan Belgrade in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

The tie will be played over two legs - 6/7 August and 13 August - and Rangers will be away from home first.

Should Rangers lose this tie or in the play-off round, they will enter the Europa League group stage.

This is the fourth successive season the Ibrox side have started out in the third qualifying round of the competition.

Last term, Rangers beat Servette before losing to PSV Eindhoven in the play-off - then went on to reach the round of 16 in the Europa League.

Like Rangers, Dinamo and Partizan were runners-up in their leagues last season.

    Chelsea

Chelsea fan here. I don’t recognise (again) who we signed and don’t care who we are still after. Like Didier Drogba said, I don’t recognise my club anymore. In fact, I don’t even recognise the bloated game - full of constantly knackered players. Done with it and I’ll be first of tens of thousands.

Bradford City fan here - as we missed out on Kylian Mbappe, I'd like to see us sign Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins to play in a two up top, with Lionel Messi in behind if we can get him on loan.

    Anon

The Bantams can but dream...well we did ask who you would like your club to sign if money was no object. Thanks for the message, but would be nice to put a name to your post!

    Chelsea

CFC fan here. A striker!! Nicolas Jackson is barely Championship standard yet we keep putting him in the starting XI. We could have finished fourth if he had put away another 10 goals last season.

    Ryan

As a Chelsea fan, just one experienced footballer would be nice to be honest.

    Sam, London

I wish we would sign Marc Guehi back! The amount of goals we conceded last season shows that our defence isn’t good enough. Maybe too much to ask for Lunin from Real, but he would be a massive improvement on Sanchez as well!

  20. Felix heading to Villa?published at 11:55 British Summer Time 22 July

    Monday's gossip column

    Joao FelixImage source, Getty Images

Joao Felix's star may have fallen somewhat since Atletico Madrid paid £113m to sign the Portuguese forward from Benfica in 2019, but he remains a player in demand.

According to a report in the Sun, external, Aston Villa are the latest club to be linked with the 24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona and had a previous spell at Chelsea.

It is suggested that Villa could turn to Felix as a replacement for Moussa Diaby, should he complete a reported £60m switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

The Sun reports that Felix has "found himself on the fringes" at Atletico following a fallout with the club's Argentine manager Diego Simeone.
