More from new manager Enzo Maresca on Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Wrexham:

"I think the result is always important but I think in this moment, the most important thing is to judge the performance; especially after two weeks. We started, I was happy first-half, also second-half but we conceded two goals.

"Overall, I'm thinking about players like Wes [Fofana] who played 45 minutes after one year. Like I said, the result for us is always important but in this moment, also we need to judge different things. I'm very happy with the performance."

After a near perfect pre-season last year Chelsea just about stumbled over the line in 6th so I'm not going to read too much into a draw with Wrexham. Still disappointed in us leaving Trevoh Chalobah behind though.

  3. Maresca defends style after Chelsea draw with Wrexhampublished at 07:50 British Summer Time 25 July

    Chelsea 2-2 Wrexham

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said his side "are going to concede goals this season playing out from the back" after two defensive errors in a 2-2 draw with Wrexham in his first game in charge.

Goals from Wrexham's Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott after the break cancelled out Christopher Nkunku's first-half opener for Chelsea, who escaped defeat courtesy of a late equaliser from Lesley Ugochukwu.

Asked about conceding goals through his style of play, Maresca said: "Hopefully, not too many. It is one of the risks that you have trying to build from behind."

And the 44-year-old former Leicester boss said he would "absolutely" continue his style, adding: "I have no doubt. I think you are going to concede in different ways, so you need to decide in which way you need to concede a goal.

"Sometimes teams that try to build from the back concede goals but I think you are going to score more than you concede."

Although he spoke about Emile Smith-Rowe after Arsenal's game against Bournemouth, manager Mikel Arteta was less keen to discuss his attempt to sign Riccardo Calafiori.

The Gunners are hoping to get the Italy defender's move from Bologna tied up in time for Calafiori, 22, to join them for the last leg of their US tour in Philadelphia, where they play Liverpool on 31 July.

Not that you would know it by listening to Arteta inside LA Galaxy's stadium.

"There is no update," he said.

"As soon as we have something to say we will be the first one to say.

"You know I don’t like talking about external players. But this is the situation at the moment."

Fulham for Emile Smith Rowe feels like quite a big drop in standard for him. Yes they're a Premier League team but I would have thought a bigger team would go for him with all the potential he has. The sale will be all profit for Arsenal as he's a homegrown player so it'll help them with PSR rules but it's really sad to see him go and especially for what looks like quite a low price. Can't imagine Gunners fans will be too happy seeing one of their own go.

  8. 'Things are happening' - Arteta on Smith Rowepublished at 07:22 British Summer Time 25 July

    Arsenal 1-1 Bournemouth (5-4 pens)

    BBC Sport in Los Angeles

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed "things are happening in the background" around playmaker Emile Smith Rowe.

Smith Rowe, 23, was the only senior squad member not to play any part in Arsenal's pre-season game with Bournemouth, which the Gunners won 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Fulham are keen on Smith Rowe, who remained on the bench throughout.

“Things are happening in the background and we decided the best thing to do was leave him out,” said Arteta.

  10. Arsenal beat Bournemouth on penalties in Los Angelespublished at 07:11 British Summer Time 25 July

    Arsenal 1-1 Bournemouth (5-4 pens)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport in Los Angeles

Arsenal opened their three-match tour of the United States by beating Bournemouth - but needed a penalty shootout to overcome the Cherries in Los Angeles.

Fabio Vieira gave Arsenal a first-half lead when he met Reiss Nelson's deep cross on the volley and drove it first time into the far bottom corner.

In a competitive game during which three players were booked, Karl Hein denied Dominic Solanke and Daniel Jebbison after the forward - who was signed from Sheffield United this summer - found himself inside the penalty area with only the Estonia goalkeeper to beat.

However, Hein had no chance of keeping out Antoine Semenyo’s strike, which hit Omar Rekik as he tried to close the effort down and dropped into the far corner.

Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto denied Leandro Trossard late on after some excellent play in the build-up from Martin Odegaard, so the pre-planned shootout settled the spoils with Ryan Christie's miss proving decisive as Poland defender Jakub Kiwior slotted in the winning spot-kick.

All Arsenal’s experienced players available for the tour had some involvement with the exception of Emile Smith Rowe, who has been linked with a move to Fulham.

  11. Ugochukwu earns Chelsea late draw against Wrexhampublished at 07:05 British Summer Time 25 July

    Chelsea 2-2 Wrexham

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu spared manager Enzo Maresca's blushes in his first game as manager by equalising late on against League One Wrexham in Santa Clara, California.

A sharp finish in the penalty box from Christopher Nkunku opened the scoring in the 35th minute of Chelsea's opening friendly on their pre-season tour of the United States.

But Wrexham took a surprise lead after both teams made wholesale changes at half-time with Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott scoring following defensive mistakes.

Ugochukwu equalised in the 82nd minute as Wrexham impressed - adding to their 1-1 draw against Bournemouth on Saturday in a half-empty Levi's Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.
