It was hot [at the game], but it's hot for every team and everywhere in Europe right now, so that's not an excuse. They lacked intensity, cohesion in this team, I think [Didier] Deschamps made the wrong calls in some positions. Some players weren't fit to play, and in the end France created a lot of chances again, which is maybe the more worrying now - they don't take enough of them chances, they haven't scored in open play yet - one penalty and own goal, which is not enough considering the attacking talent France have in their squad.

Also, they were in the lead, at least you don't play well you are in the lead just make sure you see the game out, and usually this team dose - they are ruthless. That's why they go far in tournament, and yesterday they were not and that's also quite worrying.

  3. Slow starts all-round?published at 10:37 British Summer Time 26 June

But it not just England who have had a rather slow start to Euro 2024.

Italy have looked far from defending champions so far in this tournament. They had to come from behind against Albania in their opener and were then deservedly beaten by Spain, before equalising against Croatia in the final seconds to secure a place in the last 16.

World Cup runners-up France have also had to settle with a second-place finish in Group D after a win and two draws.

And the Netherlands have looked off it. They have only qualified for the last 16 by one of the four third-best places available.

The football might not have been the most inspiring against Slovenia, but it was another clean sheet for England and for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

He recorded his 11th clean sheet in 22 international tournament appearances for the Three Lions and moved clear of Peter Shilton to claim the record for most tournament games without conceding.

Earlier, in England’s opening match of the tournament, Pickford became the most capped English goalkeeper at major international tournaments after featuring in his side’s 1-1 draw against Denmark.

He made his England debut in 2017 and has made 63 appearances to date, keeping 31 clean sheets in the process.

I still believe in this England team and Southgate. They're feeling their way into the tournament and will peak in the final. Let's save the negativity until we are actually eliminated rather than writing the obituary pre-emptively! It's coming home!

  7. 'England are at least in control of their own destiny'published at 10:13 British Summer Time 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

When he came on [Cole Palmer] definitely made an impact. [Kobbie] Mainoo did well as well in the midfield, bit more positive in that respect. I also think [Phil] Foden is more effective in the 10 rather than Jude Bellingham.

Whether Palmer is going to start, I mean he probably deserves to, he certainly staked a claim after coming off the bench last night.

England have achieved their objective to top the group, because when you look at France or the Netherlands, they didn't. England are at least now in control of their own destiny, and they are in a half of the draw that doesn't include Spain, Germany, France or Portugal.

Do they need to play better? Yes, they do, but they've topped the group with a lot of room for improvement still. In that sense, I think that's the positive aspect we have to take.

England's record at Euro24: Won the group, conceded one goal, dominated possession. It wasn’t pretty but the knockout games will be more entertaining because they are winner-takes-all. Last night Slovenia had 10 men behind the ball for most of the match and it’s always difficult for attacking sides with so little space. If Slovenia had been more aggressive and left room at the back it would have been a different game.

  10. 'Palmer looked really cool'published at 10:02 British Summer Time 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

Substitutes Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer were deservedly praised for their impact in what was an improved second-half display from England in their 0-0 draw with Slovenia.

Mainoo replaced Conor Gallagher in the centre of midfield at half-time, while attacking midfielder Palmer added extra impetus after replacing Bukayo Saka on 71 minutes.

And Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon showed in a five-minute cameo a desire to run at the Slovenia defenders.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast, former Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart said: "Mainoo produced a really good performance in the second-half. But what I found interesting was when we knew he was coming on, we had no idea who he was taking off.

"It was exciting to see the subs come on. Anthony Gordon did not get much time but Cole Palmer looked really cool. He is some player and he really makes things happen without looking like he's making any effort. He is exceptional to watch.

"We just have to take the group win and keep building."

    Jude BellinghamImage source, gett

Joe Hart on BBC One: "Jude Bellingham knows the quality he's got and he knows it is not the stage that is letting him down because he has stood there in a Real Madrid shirt and won a Champions League.

"It is not quite working and he's had a quiet couple of games."

Have we put him on a pedestal?

Gary Neville on ITV: "England have Cole Palmer, Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Kobbie Mainoo, Phil Foden - massive, massive talents and we cannot afford to mismanage them.

"We are the only country in the world who continually ask 'where can these players fit?'."

Cole Palmer, Kobbie Mainoo and Adam WhartonImage source, gett

Ange Postecoglou on ITV: "Your nature as a coach is to ease them [young players] into things, but every now and then there is young player that comes along that just smashes the door down and you have got to let them go through.

"I am sure 12 months ago Kobbie Mainoo, Adam Wharton and Cole Palmer were not in his top-40 players for this Euros - they could end up being the key players."

  17. 'The system seems to be the issue'published at 09:25 British Summer Time 26 June

    England 0-0 Slovenia

Kobbie Mainoo and Declan RiceImage source, Getty Images

Jermaine Jenas on BBC: "If we are honest, we didn’t get the performance England fans are looking for. I think most fans have left this stadium with more questions than answers.

"The positive with Kobbie Mainoo coming on, he seems to be built for international football. He seems to add a calmness and it settled Declan Rice down a bit.

"Phil Foden tried to get on the ball and tried to make things happen. But the system seems to be the issue."
