Brighton came out on top in a highly entertaining match against West Ham to claim their first Women's Super League win of the season.

The Seagulls were dominant in the first half and after Caitlin Hayes headed in the opener from Fran Kirby's corner, Kiko Seike finished clinically to double the lead before the break.

However, West Ham were a different side in the second half and, after substitute Ffion Morgan was taken down by Brighton keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Viviane Asseyi coolly converted a 51st-minute penalty to give the visitors hope.

Just seven minutes later, though, Brighton restored their two-goal advantage as Sweden international Rosa Kafaji curled a brilliant effort into the far top corner from the left edge of the box.

With West Ham trying to find a way back into the game, there were chances for both sides.

Brighton forward Michelle Agyemang headed Riko Ueki's looping effort off the line at one end, moments after Kafaji had nodded a golden chance wide at the other.

Another goal felt inevitable and, with four minutes remaining, it went the way of the hosts.

Seike's low cross-shot came back off the post but Brighton maintained possession and Marisa Olislagers' shot from the edge of the area flew in off the bar.

Victory lifted Dario Vidosic's side up to sixth, while West Ham remain bottom of the table without a point to their name after three games.

Kiko Seike was on target as Brighton condemned West Ham to a fifth straight WSL loss

While West Ham will wonder what might have been had they shown the same intensity in the first 45 minutes as they did after the break, but such was Brighton's class going forward that it was unlikely to have affected the outcome.

Vidosic's side swarmed all over the Hammers out of possession in the opening period and won the ball back high up the pitch time and again.

How they did not open the scoring through Agyemang in one such incident remains a mystery.

With possession won inside the visitors' defensive third, the England forward rose to meet a cross from the left but her header from five yards out was too close to goalkeeper Kinga Szemik.

The rebound fell kindly to Agyemang, back on loan at Brighton from Arsenal, but somehow the 19-year-old failed to convert from three yards as her wait for a first WSL goal of the season goes on.

The teenager was still heavily involved in her side's attacking play, but it was a former England star, Fran Kirby, running the show in the number 10 position.

She made sure everything was knitted together smartly, bringing the lively Seike and Kafaji into play on the flanks at just the right time.

Brighton's wingers combined superbly for the second goal with a one-two inside the box and were a constant threat to the Hammers backline.

If that front four wasn't enough, Spaniard Carla Camacho was brought on for the last 20 minutes to ensure continued pressure on the Londoners.

Whether it was through their relentless counter-press or some neat interplay, Brighton found themselves converging on the West Ham penalty area with great frequency.

And for all West Ham's improvement after a triple change at the break, the only frustration for the Seagulls would be that they didn't score more, or finish the game off sooner.

What's next for these teams?

Both sides are in action on Wednesday as the League Cup gets under way.

The pair are both in Group C with Brighton starting away at Portsmouth (19:00 BST) and West Ham facing a London derby at Charlton (19:00 BST).
