Former Rangers manager Alex McLeish believes Philippe Clement's side are getting their swagger back as they look to continue momentum with a Europa League win over Union Saint-Gilloise tonight.

Rangers' 3-1 victory at Dundee United last weekend was their first Premiership away win in five attempts and McLeish was particularly impressed with the new front pairing of Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers.

"I really thought there was a purpose about Rangers and a cloud had lifted after all the criticism of their away form," he told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland radio programme.

"Clement will demand the same again. Take the performance level, confidence and rhythm from the Dundee Utd game into this one.

"They had a fantastic performance in Nice [4-1 Europa League win in November] and Igamane was outstanding that night and has been ever since. To see him and Dessers together was quite amazing the other day. They looked very dangerous.

"Belgian teams have been terrific on the road but Rangers have a very good chance of winning this one and further cementing their confidence."

  3. Tottenham v Elfsborg - key statspublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham v Elfsborg (20:00 GMT)

    • Tottenham’s only previous meeting with Swedish opposition was in the 1995 Intertoto Cup, a 2-1 defeat to Östers IF at Brighton’s Goldstone Ground.
    • This is Elfsborg’s first ever game against English opposition, and their first meeting with a British opponent since a goalless draw with Celtic in qualifying for the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League.
    • Spurs are unbeaten in 16 home games in all European competitions (W13 D3) since losing 1-0 to RB Leipzig in February 2020. However, three of their last five have ended as draws, as many as in their previous 45 combined.
    • Elfsborg have lost seven of their last eight away games in major European competitions (W1), conceding 24 goals across these eight games.
    • Tottenham’s UEFA Europa League games this season have seen 213 shots (92 for, 121 against), with only Galatasaray’s (217) and Besiktas’ (214) witnessing more. Spurs have both scored and conceded in each of their last four matches in the competition (8 goals for, 8 goals against).

  5. Rashford 'must change' before Man Utd return - Amorimpublished at 15:33 Greenwich Mean Time

FSCB v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

Marcus Rashford "has to change" before returning to action for Manchester United, says head coach Ruben Amorim.

It is seven weeks since Rashford, 27, last featured for his club and the England forward said in December he was "ready for a new challenge."

Rashford has once again been left out of Manchester United's squad for Thursday's Europa League encounter against Romanian side FCSB in Bucharest.

"Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with him - but he has to change," Amorim said on Wednesday.

"If he changes, we are more than welcome [to include him] - and we need it. But in this moment we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Rashford, if he wants it really bad.

"You [the media] want to make it personal, I have nothing against Marcus, but I have to make the same rules for everybody.

"We need goals, we need [players who can go] one against one, we need threat in the final third."

  6. What do the British clubs need in the Europa League?published at 15:30 Greenwich Mean Time

Heading into their final Europa League league phase matches tonight, British clubs Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers are all guaranteed to reach at least the play-offs.

Man Utd and Spurs are the two in the best position, sitting fourth and sixth respectively.

    • A win for Man Utd away at FCSB (eighth) in Bucharest would seal a top eight finish. Results elsewhere could see Man Utd still finish in the top eight without winning.
    • Spurs host Swedish side Elfsborg (20th) and are in the top eight by a point. A win would also guarantee their spot in the round of 16.
    • Rangers (13th) are at home to Union Saint-Gilloise (15th). Mathematically, it is still possible to reach the top eight, but their chances of doing so are slim. A top 16 finish would give them a more favourable opponent in the play-offs.

Tom, London:Dan in Bedford should probably consider how long ago a bid for a player is made before details are reported in the media. Does he think it's like eBay?

Mark, Edinburgh: I hate to burst Dan's bubble (14:12) but the bid for Watkins was seemingly lodged last week, not last night. As for the bidding process, it's not the manager who places the bid, it's the recruitment staff. Arteta was pretty tied up with other matters, what with having a game to prepare for at 8pm as well.

Fergus:Re: Dan - it is the January transfer window ! What do you expect!

  13. 'We are going to work until the last second of the window'published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time

Everton v Leicester (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy on potential incomings prior to deadline day: "We are still working on a couple of things, we know it’s the deadline and what you’re working towards. It’s something we’re going to address until the last second of the window and see what we can do. Until Monday we can close it and look back on it.

When asked if he was disappointed he hasn't been able to get players in sooner: "No, it’s about knowing what you’re doing with the club and trying to do the maximum possible to get people in who can strengthen the team. It’s what we’re trying to do and if we can get something great, if not we will carry on with this group."

On whether he is prepared for players to possibly leave before the window closes: "It’s part of the job and we know in this window, it’s how it is. Its 24/7, you have to be ready for that, prepared for that and in communication with the players which are part of that situation. At the same time the process of preparing the game is on, welcome to a manager’s job."

  14. Sulemana and Dibling in trainingpublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time

Ipswich Town v Southampton (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ivan Juric on team news: "Kamaldeen [Sulemana] and [Taylor] Dibling have been in training today with us and they will be with us. We had a problem with Fraser and Nathan Wood, not big ones but they will be out for this game.

"[Dibling] has recovered already, he did all the training. He's ready.

"Aaron Ramsdale did one part of the training, tomorrow I think he will be OK."

"[Jack Stephens] I'm very happy he is with us, the recovery they did a great job, he did two training sessions without any problems. Quality player, competitive player. He's good."

  15. 'He has an unbelievable skill'published at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time

    Nott'm Forest v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on Evan Ferguson's performance in the Premier League: "I think it's difficult if you always have small issues, you can't get in the rhythm and I think that's the main thing. We need to get Evan being stable on the pitch, being consistent on the pitch. We try to help him to get in the right shape and be resilient. He shows in every session that he has an unbelievable skill."

  16. 'He only wants to play'published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time

    Nott'm Forest v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on Evan Ferguson: "I'm happy he is in our squad, I want to keep working with him. Like I said, it's always important to discuss with him the importance of the development of the player.

"That's the main thing of the club. We want to improve the development of the players, we want to help him, therefore we need an exchange, then we see what makes sense for the player in the next six months, we will make a decision together, it's not an individual decision.

"I felt in the conversations that I have had with Evan that he only wants to play, that is the main thing. No matter if it is here or at another club."

  17. 'The other things we can't influence'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time

    Nott'm Forest v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

More on Evan Ferguson: "My job is to focus on the work with the players outside on the pitch, that's what we do. We trained very well yesterday, he trained well yesterday. The other things we can't influence. He knows my thoughts, the thoughts of the club, we know the thoughts from Evan. That's the important thing."

  19. Hurzeler 'happy' Ferguson in squadpublished at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time

    Nott'm Forest v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler on Evan Ferguson: "Ferguson has trained for the first time yesterday, He's in good shape and we are very happy he is back in our squad. He came through training today without injury. We will see what happens. Honestly I'm ok that he is in our squad, I am happy he's in our squad."

  20. New additions 'have to be special'published at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time

Nottingham Forest v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on whether he is close to adding any players to the squad: "We just finished a training session, this is what is important. People at the club are working on what they have to work on and we are focused on preparing the team.

"Someone coming to give us help has to be someone different and has to fit in the squad. Someone that brings a different option, a different solution. That was our approach as the coaching staff and then the club has to work. It is not easy to operate in this transfer window but it is always the same. Someone has to be special."
