Two goals from Isobel Goodwin gave London City Lionesses their first ever Women's Super League victory as they beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park.
Newly-promoted London City started with intent and Goodwin shot high into the roof of the net after a 13th-minute corner to put them ahead.
The 22-year-old then latched on to a cut-back from Nikita Parris and fired in from close range to double London City's lead just before the hour mark.
Everton reduced the deficit with 19 minutes left when Jana Fernandez committed a clumsy challenge on substitute Yuka Momiki in the box.
Momiki slotted the resulting penalty into the bottom right corner but the home side could not find an equaliser as London City held on for a historic win.
Everton are sixth in the WSL table while the victory moves London City up to eighth.
Superb Goodwin fires London City to historic victory
London City lost their first two WSL matches against Arsenal and Manchester United, conceding nine goals in the process, but a period of adjustment was to be expected for the first fully independent club to reach the WSL.
Ambitious American owner Michele Kang bankrolled 16 summer signings but it was Goodwin, top scorer in the Championship last season with 16 goals, who was pivotal to victory.
The English forward had four shots at goal, converting two, and proved to be a constant threat.
Before scoring her second, she dragged a shot just wide after driving through the Everton defence.
Jocelyn Precheur's London City side face another test next weekend against Manchester City but will travel to the Joie Stadium with the confidence of their first win behind them.
Everton started the season with a brilliant 4-1 win at rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby but they have failed to build momentum, losing both league matches since.
There was huge fanfare when Goodison Park became the permanent home for Brian Sorensen's side at the start of this campaign, however the new era at the iconic stadium has begun with two defeats.
The loss against London City ended a 10-game unbeaten streak against newly promoted opposition and Everton now have three straight away matches before they return to Goodison when they face Manchester United next month.
What's next for these teams?
Both sides will be in League Cup action in midweek as the group stage gets underway on Wednesday.
Everton travel to Manchester City (19:00 BST) with London City Lionesses facing a trip to WSL2 side Crystal Palace (19:30 BST).
