Tuchel 'excited to make our dream come true'

  1. Tuchel's track record with Chelsea marks him out as strong England candidatepublished at 08:19 British Summer Time

    BBC Sport football news reporter

Thomas Tuchel was a charismatic and successful leader at Chelsea and wrote himself into history by winning the Champions League in 2021.

The German was keen to stay on longer term in Roman Abramovich’s set-up which consisted of key figures, including Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech.

However, a rift quickly emerged after the two left following a change of ownership under the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital ownership which led to his exit in September 2022.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Tuchel was exceptional with the English media, worked well with the club’s academy talent and was popular with supporters.

It's fair to say Tuchel also fell in love with English football during his spell in west London and has targeted a return to managing in this country.

Many former players remain loyal and friendly with Tuchel but the pragmatic style of play sometimes led to criticism.

Thomas Tuchel has won trophies in all three of the countries he has managed in, winning league titles in both France and Germany.

While he wasn't able to topple Pep Guardiola's Manchester City for the Premier League during his short stint in England, he was able to impressively overcome Guardiola's side in the 2020-21 Champions League final as Chelsea got their hands on the title for the second time.

    Tuchel's full list of silverware:

    • 1x Champions League
    • 1x FIFA Club World Cup
    • 1x German Champion
    • 2x French Champion
    • 1x German Cup
    • 1x UEFA Super Cup
    • 1x French Cup
    • 1x French League Cup
    • 2x French Super Cup

Thomas Tuchel was first appointed as Augsburg II manager in 2007, for one season before moving to Mainz 05.

After a successful five-year spell, he moved to Borussia Dortmund in 2015.

Two seasons later he moved to Paris St-Germain and in 2021 he was appointed Chelsea boss. He was sacked by the Blues after just over a season and he was named Bayern Munich boss a year later.

Tuchel left the role at the German club in May.

In June, Thomas Tuchel ruled himself out of the running to take over at Manchester United - it was understood that he met Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in France.

And now, he is set to become the third non-British permanent manager of the England men's team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

  6. NI hat-trick 'best night of my life' - Pricepublished at 07:57 British Summer Time

    FT: Northern Ireland 5-0 Bulgaria

    Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland forward Isaac Price says scoring a hat-trick in Tuesday's 5-0 win over Bulgaria is "the best night of my life".

Price netted twice in the first-half before a stunning 25-yard effort with nine minutes to play secured a first hat-trick for Price as a Northern Ireland player.

An own goal by Bulgarian goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov and a powerful Josh Magennis effort helped Michael O'Neill's side to a big win at Windsor Park.

The result moves Northern Ireland to the top of Group C3 with two matches remaining.

"It's the best night of my life. It's what you dream of as a kid," Price told BBC Sport NI.

George Best scored a hat-trick the last time Northern Ireland won 5-0 at Windsor Park, in April 1971 against Cyprus and it was only the fourth time the nation has ever scored five goals in a match.

  7. Resolute Scotland cause Ronaldo meltdownpublished at 07:54 British Summer Time

    FT: Scotland 0-0 Portugal

    Scotland

Away briefly from Thomas Tuchel, there was some Uefa Nations League action last night including a significant point for Scotland at home to Portugal.

The draw means Steve Clarke's side have now won just one of their past 16 matches and remain bottom of their Nations League group, but they avoided the unwanted history of becoming the first Scotland team to lose five straight matches.

Portugal were left frustrated, and none more so than Cristiano Ronaldo on his 200th international start. Jeered throughout the evening at Hampden Park, he missed numerous chances to score his 134th goal for his country.

Frustration then boiled over as animated hand waving was aimed the way of team-mate Rafael Leao late in the game, and there was time for some sarcastic clapping and berating when the referee blew the final whistle before he stormed off.

Sad day for English Football. Massive backward step in my opinion. We are basically saying that young English coaches are only good enough to manage the age groups at England level. We have been here before it didn’t work then and it won’t work now.

  10. Carsley to take charge of next two England gamespublished at 07:46 British Summer Time

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

Lee Carsley is set to remain in charge for the final two Nations League matches of the year next month versus Greece and Republic of Ireland, with Thomas Tuchel set to formally take over after that.

  11. How did we get to this point?published at 07:43 British Summer Time

England have been without a permanent manager since Gareth Southgate resigned following the Three Lions' Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain.

Lee Carsley was placed in charge on an interim basis "with a view to remaining in the position throughout autumn" while the Football Association assessed suitable options.

Carsley has won three of his four matches in charge and gained praise for a more attacking style of play than that seen at the recent Euros under Southgate, and for introducing several fresh faces to the England squad including midfielder Angel Gomes.

However, the former Everton midfielder was criticised for his confusing and often contradictory comments to the media, while he also oversaw the shambolic 2-1 home defeat to Greece in which a disjointed England side lined up without a recognised striker.

While Carsley has been in interim charge, England have been linked with several managers of various nationalities and levels of elite experience.

And the FA have settled on a foreign coach with experience of winning some of the biggest trophies in European club football, in Thomas Tuchel.

Thomas Tuchel has been popular with the fans and players at every club he has managed. His problem has been with interfering owners. A good choice for the England job in my view if left to get on with it.

    Alan

As a Chelsea fan who watched us under Potter and Tuchel, there's no comparison. Tuchel's teams were motivated, organised and tactically brilliant. Potter was completely out of his depth.
