1. How Garnacho and United driftedpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time

Let's take a look at where things started to turn sour between Alejandro Garnacho and Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim dropped Garnacho - along with Marcus Rashford - from his squad for the 2-1 win against Manchester City on 15 December, 2024, because of "training performances, game performances and engagement with team-mates."

Garnacho returned to the fold four days later in the League Cup quarter-final defeat to Spurs.

Garnacho was a regular starter for United in 2023-24.

Nobody will ever forget his incredible overhead-kick goal against Everton, but his performances - like those of his team-mates - were largely inconsistent.

In April 2024, Garnacho apologised to Ten Hag after 'liking' social media posts criticising the manager for substituting him at half-time during a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Matt: There's a lot of rumours about Emi Martinez going to United. If this does happen, who would Villa target as a replacement?

Great question – if Martinez leaves, whether it is for Manchester United or anywhere else.

Jordan Pickford is England’s best keeper but Everton will not sell and he is incredibly happy there so it will not be him.

James Trafford is a fine young keeper at Burnley, but he will not come cheap and Newcastle United have been heavily linked there. If he left would Nick Pope be happy as second choice? I’m not so sure.

Trafford would be very much a live contender for clubs seeking an upgrade (I put Chelsea in that bracket as well) in the goalkeeper position.

One keeper who is currently being linked with Villa is Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, who was Ligue 1’s keeper of the season.

Villa is a club that prepares for all eventualities, and with Martinez appearing to wave goodbye at the end of last season, they will no doubt have a plan in place should this come to pass.

All depends on what happens now with the self-styled (although not in my opinion) “the world’s number one” Martinez.

After joining Manchester United's youth set-up in 2020, Alejandro Garnacho made his first senior start for United on 27 October 2022, in a 3–0 win over Moldovan team Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League.

An ankle injury disrupted Garnacho's break-through season, though then-United boss Erik ten Hag was pleased with the winger's performances.

Ben: Good morning Phil. It looks like Manchester United are addressing the goal scoring issues from last season. In my view, there is still strengthening to do at goalkeeper, wing backs and strengthening a stodgy and distinctly uncreative midfield. I’m not sure that is possible in one window. Where do you see the priorities?

Where do you start, Ben? United’s team has gone into decline as a result of poor management and poor recruitment. I think they are right to strengthen in the attacking areas, with Matheus Cunha in and Bryan Mbuemo likely. It will now be interesting to see if they go for a main central striker.

Andre Onana does not convince me as a top-class keeper, but you can’t rebuild Manchester United in a day and they have clearly decided the top end of the team is a priority.

This is a huge job to get them even close to main title contenders.

  7. Benitez a 'solid and experienced' playerpublished at 13:25 British Summer Time

    Jordan Butler
    BBC Sport

Crystal Palace have not only signed a solid and experienced player in Walter Benitez, but he’s also a serial winner. The 32-year old has been victorious in 74 of his 97 Eredivisie matches with PSV Eindhoven – lifting back-to-back league titles – and his win ratio of 76.3% is the second highest among all goalkeepers to feature at least 50 times in the division:

    Walter Benitez statsImage source, .

He possesses plenty of European experience, with a total of 44 appearances in Uefa competitions for the Dutch giants and his previous employers Nice. He starred in triumphs over Liverpool and Juventus last season, but his performance against Arsenal in last season’s Champions League round of 16 was one to forget – Benitez shipped seven goals from eight shots on target in a 7-1 home defeat.

The signing will also evoke memories of another Argentine goalkeeper Julian Speroni, who is considered a Palace legend after more than 400 appearances for during a 15-year spell. He helped the Eagles reach the Premier League via the Championship play-off final in 2013, was on the bench for the FA Cup final in 2016 and was named the club’s Player of the Year four times before hanging up his gloves in 2019.

Graham: Hi Phil, what’s your thoughts on the going on at the once great Sheffield Wednesday? It seems a sad sight from the outside.

Hi Graham. Really sad to see such a wonderful old club, with such rich potential, in this sorry state. The irony is, Wednesday have such a capable manager in Danny Rohl, who could really take them places with the right backing. You must also sympathise with all those working at the club. It must be morale-sapping.

The ideal scenario would be for chairman Djephon Chansiri to sell up and let someone with greater ambition and investment take Sheffield Wednesday back in the right direction.

Hi Dawn. If we take Liverpool as one of those clubs, at least in Wirtz’s opinion, I would say you are currently looking at Real Madrid and Paris St. Germain, who are the best team in Europe.

Plenty of others, say Barcelona, might take issue.

  10. Would Nkunku mean the end of Hojlund?published at 12:58 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport chief football news reporter

Manchester United's reported interest in Christopher Nkunku raises questions:

Could Nkunku be a first choice number nine at United?

If he came it would surely mean the end for Rasmus Hojlund, wouldn't it?

But the Dane cost £72m, only £28.8m of which has disappeared for Profit and Sustainability purposes, so United would need a fee of £43.2m to break even.

If they can't get it, is there a case to be made for sticking with Hojlund if Nkunku is the alternative?

  11. Busy summer for United recruitment chiefspublished at 12:51 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone

I suspect that, through technical director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell, Manchester United are having a lot of conversations about various players to get an overview of what is possible given there are still weaknesses in central midfield - even with skipper Bruno Fernandes dropping deep - and the right-sided wing-back slot.

Everyone knows Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are surplus to requirements but given their salaries, how realistic is it United could get a transfer fee without some kind of wage subsidy?

Garnacho is obviously heading out as well but the mooted £60m feels a bit high and is more than Chelsea paid for Nkunku two years ago.

As they wait to see if their second attempt to prise Bryan Mbeumo out of Brentford has been successful, Manchester United are now being linked with Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.

A deal involving Nkunku moving to Old Trafford, with Alejandro Garnacho going the other way was first mentioned during the winter window and United were quick to say they were not interested.

They certainly have other options as they look at the number nine role, which head coach Ruben Amorim feels they can upgrade.

Garnacho has reportedly been told he has no future at United under Ruben Amorim, while Nkunku has struggled to make an impact since joining Chelsea in 2023.

    Jaka BijolImage source, Getty Images

Nigel: Hi Phil. After the highs of Leeds’ promotion and our city centre parade, I’m now worrying about how we will manage in the top-flight. What are your thoughts on where we should be focusing our transfer activities? Should we be investing most of our funds to improve our defence or looking further up the pitch? Proven PL players or stars of the future?

Morning, Nigel. I think a strong defence will be vital for Leeds United this season, and manager Daniel Farke has already acknowledged that by bringing in Slovenia centre-back Jaka Bijol from Udinese for £15m.

I also think Premier League experience is vital because you need players who have been around the block, so I can see Leeds going into that territory as well.

I genuinely believe Leeds United, out of the promoted teams, have the best chance of bucking the recent trend and staying up.

Dutch publication De Telegraaf, external had a chat with the 20-year-old Feyenoord player before Netherlands U21 face England U21 in the semi-finals on Wednesday, and while he didn't give anything away about a potential transfer to Brentford, he did say it was a "dream" to play in the Premier League. "Hopefully that will come true one day," he added.

Milambo scored seven goals and managed nine assists from 43 games for Feyenoord last season.

Unai Emery, manager of Aston VillaImage source, Getty Images

Dan: Do Villa have to sell a player before the end of the month for the second season in a row? Who is it most likely to be? Can they then start buying players again in July?

Andrew: Us Aston Villa fans have been given mixed messages by 'the experts' about how much PSR trouble we are in. Some say we need to sell players before the deadline to comply, while others think we will be absolutely fine. Can you bring any clarity on our situation?

Hello Dan and Andrew. I said last week that Villa will certainly have to smart in the markets to keep on the right side of PSR, but this is a club of high ambition who will do everything to ensure Unai Emery’s squad is strengthened not weakened.

The fact they did not achieve Champions League football for next season is, of course, another blow.

There is a speculation that keeper Emi Martinez could leave, while Villa would be open to the sale of Leon Bailey. Jacob Ramsey has been touted for a move away, but there would be real pain for Villa and their fans if this gifted local talent was sold. That would only be considered with the greatest reluctance.

Morgan Rogers is regarded as untouchable, but there will be sales.

Villa and Emery are experienced enough to plan for all eventualities, so I can see sales but also incomings to strengthen the squad.

It would have been a lot easier had they been able to get Champions League football next season but I think you can trust Emery and the rest of Villa’s hierarchy to get it right, given their track record.

  19. Who is potential new Brentford boss Andrews?published at 11:45 British Summer Time

    Keith AndrewsImage source, Getty Images

Time for a bit of 'getting to know' learning so we're all clued up if/when Keith Andrews becomes Brentford boss.

The 44-year-old spent 16 years playing in English football for 12 clubs including Wolves, MK Dons, Blackburn Rovers and Brighton.

Some 85 of his 412 professional appearances came in the Premier League and he earned 35 caps for the Republic of Ireland, including playing at Euro 2012.

Andrews ended his career in 2015 at MK Dons and moved straight into the role of first-team coach at the club, assisting Karl Robinson.

He became Stephen Kenny's assistant with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s in 2019 and then the senior side from 2020 until Kenny's departure in 2023.

Andrews then spent the 2023-24 season as Chris Wilder's assistant at Sheffield United as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

In July 2024, he was appointed Brentford's set‑piece coach - succeeding Bernardo Cueva who moved to Chelsea.

Brentford are already in the market for a new manager following Thomas Frank's departure to Tottenham, so are the club any further on in appointing a new boss?

According to our senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel, Bees set-piece coach Keith Andrews is frontrunner for the vacant job at Gtech Community Stadium.

BBC Sport understands the club are not putting a timescale on the appointment, and discussions are progressing well.

Andrews, 44, was appointed to Brentford's coaching staff in July 2024, after being part of Sheffield United's backroom team. This would be the Irishman's first managerial role.
