Arriving in Dortmund there's a fan zone outside the station where there's images and descriptions of some memorable European Championship moments involving Germany.

Their 1996 win in England is there, as is their surprise defeat to today's opponents Denmark four years earlier.

I met a couple of Denmark fans, Andrew and Anja, who remember that Euros upset 32 years ago.

"I remember it well," says Andrew. "It was fantastic. Really, we didn't even expect to go, one team pulled out and so we had the chance to go.

"The expectation was zero. But then we kept getting results and kept getting closer and closer to the final.

"Even when we got there, everyone just thought 'enjoy it' but then we won it! Fantastic."

Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand probably doesn't have happy memories of Dortmund's Westfalenstadion.

He was sacked as Mainz manager, after just 24 games in charge, after a 4-2 Bundesliga loss at Borussia Dortmund in February 2015.

That was the only time the 52-year-old has worked outside of Denmark.

There's an English team of officials today.

Michael Oliver has the whistle, Stuart Burt and Dan Cook will be waving the flags and Stuart Atwell and David Coote will be watching TV screens in a little office.

As a defender you have to put your stamp on the game, I was always very physical.

It is difficult to play as a lone striker against top defenders and I am expecting the two German centre-backs to rough Rasmus Hojlund up and make it a difficult game for him.

Along with Spain, Germany have been the team that has looked most convincing after three matches.

I was certain after Germany’s second game, our win over Hungary, that we had really arrived and the team was really rolling. It made me think we could go very far.

Our third game, against Switzerland, was much harder and we struggled a bit to get a draw but maybe it was just what we needed.

At first, Germany tried to go through the middle all the time and the Swiss just overloaded those areas to stop them. It took Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann a while to make changes and bring on David Raum and Niclas Fullkrug, but it was good to see he has got a Plan B, and I think he has got a Plan C and D if needed too.

It was good to have that test, and react to it, because Denmark could try to play like Switzerland did when we play them in the last 16. In the past that caused Germany a lot of trouble but now I am thinking maybe the team has progressed a little bit further than I had thought.

We have found some consistency - Nagelsmann has named the same team in each game here so far - which is important and also the team camp seems very relaxed. I went there earlier this week and although I did not see the players because they were on a rest day, I was speaking to some of the staff and it was a great atmosphere.

The reaction from the German public has been really positive too - the TV viewing figures have been high and the fan zones have been busy. I’m pleased with the way the supporters have grown together with this team, which is what we've always wanted in the past couple of years.

So, our story of this tournament so far has been a happy one, but we don't know yet how it is going to end. That is the same for everyone though - there are a lot of good teams left in Euro 2024 and I don't think you can pick one that is definitely going to win it.

I am confident we will do it today.

There is a little unknown of how we will perform, but I do think we have enough quality for us to get over the line.

If it is a tight game then the stadium will get us over the line.

As Euro 2024 shifts gears from the group stage to knockout games, it is time to start thinking about the dreaded penalty shootout.

There have been 22 shootouts in the European Championship - 232 kicks taken and 178 scored, including maybe the most influential penalty ever.

The pressure is on, we have seen the holders go out Italy and can the hosts stay in?

We are going to find a lot about this German team.

There seems to be a bit of nervousness back because of the draw against Switzerland. Germany are on the wrong side of the draw as far as I can see - this is a difficult one to judge tonight.

I know what Germany are, but I don't know how good or bad Denmark are as they were in that woeful group with England - they seem to be an experience well balanced team.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann: "The group stage was very interesting for us, because the first game [5-1 win over Scotland] went better than we expected, then we had a complicated game against Hungary [2-0 win], and in the Switzerland game [1-1 draw] we struggled to score an equaliser, so we have dealt with all types of matches. It's important to get to learn how to overcome difficult situations.

"The Dortmund stadium is usually very loud, and I have experienced it many times as an opposing coach. I hope we will have a similar noise coming from the stands.

"Denmark are a very well-organised team. There are phases where they are very aggressive defensively but then make great one-touch attacks. They have a lot of experienced players in the squad and a clear structure. It's a tough opponent."

Jamal Musiala's exceptional performances for Germany have lit up Euro 2024, but it is bittersweet for England.

Social media is rife with pictures of Musiala in the famous Three Lions jersey celebrating goals and trophies with midfielder Jude Bellingham during his youth career.

Cambridge United assistant manager Kevin Betsy managed Musiala in three age groups in England's youth set-up.

Betsy told BBC Sport: "I scouted Jamal at an Under-12s tournament in Brighton, and he was up front for Chelsea.

"He was tiny, one of the smallest players on the pitch, but he had amazing intelligence, game understanding, quickness over the first five metres, and dribbling ability.

"I realised I saw something special when driving home. We weren't selecting any underage players for England's first Under-15s age group, but with him and Jude, we put forward our case to make an exception.

"I don't think Germany knew much about him or his level until he faced them and was exceptional in the match."

In Germany there was a lot of chat in the build-up to this game about who should start in attack.

Kai Havertz had been given the nod in the starting line-up so far in Germany, but Niclas Fullkrug has been doing the business from off the bench.

He has scored two goals despite playing a total of 73 minutes of football so far at Euro 2024.

Before the tournament opinion was divided in the country about who should lead the line, with those pro-Fullkrug appreciating the big centre-forward's style as a throwback to Germany strikers from the past.

A street in Dortmund was, briefly, renamed, external 'Niclas-Fullkrug-Allee' but the sign has since been removed. Another goalscoring appearance off the bench tonight and it might make a reappearance.

Germany can reach the quarter-finals of a major tournament for the first time since Euro 2016 - when they lost in the semi-finals.

Since then they went out in the group stages of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and lost to England in the last 16 of Euro 2020.

I am covering this game with Vicki Sparks for Radio 5 live and I'm looking forward to seeing what Germany do next.

They started the tournament like a train against Scotland and played well again against Hungary but then found it more difficult against Switzerland. They fought back well to get a draw, though, and I am a big fan of Niclas Fullkrug who came on to score their goal.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann named the same starting XI for each of those three group games but he will have to make at least one change here because Jonathan Tah is suspended after picking up two bookings.

We saw against England that Denmark are stubborn and well organised, and their wing-backs play an important role in the way they are set up. They also have Christian Eriksen who can make things tick when they get on the ball.

I am still backing the hosts to get through this one, though, because they have got enough attacking firepower to get past the Danes' defence.

There's nothing quite like knockout football, is there?

I travelled to tonight's game from Cologne, which is about an hour from Dortmund, and a good six hours before kick-off the train was packed with football fans.

Most of those were obviously Germany supporters but there were a decent amount of England fans too.

The Three Lions' game against Slovakia tomorrow is in Gelsenkirchen, about 30 minutes from Dortmund and an hour from Cologne, so many England supporters have clearly based themselves in the latter, where there's plenty to see and do around the games.

When asked if they had a ticket to see the tournament hosts tonight, one England fan said: "Just going for the vibes".

There's many others doing likewise with the atmosphere in host cities always fantastic on game day.

A boost for Germany as defender Antonio Rudiger starts, despite being a doubt for this game.

Centre-back Jonathan Tah is suspended so Nico Schlotterbeck starts alongside Rudiger.

Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Fullkrug is among the substitutes again, despite two goals in Germany's three games so far from off the bench.

Christian Eriksen sat out training yesterday with a stomach issue but he starts in midfield for Denmark.

Morten Hjulmand - who scored against England in the group stage - is suspended so misses out while Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, still waiting for his first goal at Euro 2024, leads the attack once again.

Denmark XI: Schmeichel, Andersen, Vestergaard, Christensen, Bah, Delaney, Hojbjerg, Maehle, Eriksen, Skov Olsen, Hojlund.

One last-16 tie down, one (minor) surprise - as Switzerland deservedly dumped out the holders Italy.
