Watch: Serbia v England analysis

  1. England ratings: Reece James - 6.5published at 12:20 British Summer Time

    Serbia 0-5 England

The Chelsea right-back lost possession 11 times, the most of any England outfield player, and committed three fouls - also a high for England on the night.

But despite being replaced in the 69th minute, only Elliot Anderson (30) made more passes than James' 20 in the final third, with 95% of them completed.

Sami Mokbel: Always provides quality down the right and the fact he has played two games in quick succession bodes well for his fitness given his history of injury.

  2. England ratings: Jordan Pickford - 6published at 12:14 British Summer Time

    Serbia 0-5 England

A quiet night for Jordan Pickford and the Everton goalkeeper has now gone 630 minutes without conceding a goal in an England shirt. He's closing in on his own England record of 725 minutes without conceding, set during Euro 2021.

Sami Mokbel: Had very little to do as England dominated pretty much from start to finish. He won't be complaining.

  3. England player ratingspublished at 12:09 British Summer Time

Who doesn't love a player rating? Nobody, that's who, especially after a big England win.

So thankfully for us all, BBC Sport senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel has assessed how the players performed in Belgrade on Tuesday - and we've thrown in a bonus stat or two for good measure.

Get ready to agree wholeheartedly with every rating...

When England have had success in previous tournaments, they have played a back four of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire with John Stones and Kyle Walker. That chemistry at international level comes across really well when you don't have time to train with each other for a long period of time.

Harry Kane is a player who likes to drop in and doesn't necessarily have the legs to push the last line back so, in terms of balance, Noni Madueke, Morgan Rogers and Anthony Gordon are all players who can provide those runs into the box for Kane.

I'm dying to see us go up against a more formidable opponent. To see England on the front foot against hefty opposition would be a dream come true, especially after how far behind we were in the Euro 2024 final, in spite of our excellent results in tournaments recently.

Thanks, Craig. What a morning it's been digging through the stats...

There were plenty that will have pleased Thomas Tuchel, not least the only one that really counts for anything at the final whistle.

Right, I am going to hand you over to my colleague Sam Drury, who has been busy compiling posts on every England player to feature against Serbia.

How many will earn a place in the starting XI going forward?

That is up to Thomas Tuchel to decide - and us to talk about!

    Over to you Sam.

  9. Serbia's heaviest home defeatpublished at 11:24 British Summer Time

    Serbia 0-5 England

While it was a night of glory for England, it was a night to forget for Serbia, who suffered their worst ever home defeat in a competitive match, including when they competed as Yugoslavia and then Serbia and Montenegro.

The only time they had suffered a worse defeat on home soil was when they lost 7-2 in a friendly against a Rest of Europe XI back in 1964.

Coincidentally, their previous heaviest defeat in a competitive match at home also came against England, who beat Yugoslavia 4-1 in Belgrade in November 1987.

Sir Bobby Robson was the manager of the side, with the goals coming from Peter Beardsley, John Barnes, Bryan Robson and Tony Adams in a match that helped to secure their place at Euro 88.

  10. 'A performance we've craved for a long time'published at 11:21 British Summer Time

    Serbia 0-5 England

    Paul Robinson
    Former England goalkeeper in Serbia

The England fans were great, it was a really good night. They all seemed in good spirits and good voice. They were enjoying a performance that I think we've craved for a long time. The performance was a real statement and something we have all been waiting to see.

Thomas Tuchel's philosophy was plain to see. When he came in, we expected him to change things and we expected to see a more attacking England but, in all honesty, it was a poor watch until last night.

There was a clear identity and it was a whole team performance. You could see what the instruction from the manager was and they controlled the game from start to finish.

The mood has been largely positive this morning as we continue to reflect on England's win in Serbia last night - why wouldn't it be, eh?

Let's fill your cup a little more now with a couple of pleasing statistics that you can roll out later to impress your mates.

    • Thomas Tuchel is the first England manager to win his first five competitive matches with the Three Lions without conceding a single goal.
    • Last night against Serbia, England recorded their biggest margin of victory in an away game against any team in the top 50 Fifa rankings since records began (1993).

  12. 'Tuchel is already showing his principles'published at 11:10 British Summer Time

Thomas Tuchel is already showing the principles of how he wants to play. He likes the 4-1-4-1 with one player who's a bit more of a box-to-box midfielder in Declan Rice, so I think Rice will keep his position there.

But that number six role, the defensive midfielder could be susceptible to change. Elliot Anderson has made a really strong claim for that position but Adam Wharton is another player that can take one or two touches and play the ball forward.

The midfield profile we're currently seeing will be how Thomas Tuchel wants to go forward. He isn't treating these games as friendlies or easy games, he wants to hone in on his style and prepare for the World Cup.

A happy team is a productive team. A productive team is a winning team. Still some big names to come back but I hope Tuchel is brave enough to leave some of them out if they don't fit his vision for the team.

    Roger Bannister, Leamington Spa

It's nice to see the emphasis on the team. I hope the players that have performed this camp keep their place and the returning players have to earn their way back into the team. It is simply about building the best team, not picking a team of the best players.

Out of all of the players in the squad for these two games Elliot Anderson comes out with the most credit.

Others will get the headline for scoring last night but Anderson again followed up that breakout performance against Andorra with another performance.

He just looks comfortable and at home in there. We've been searching for someone to nail down that role under successive managers and it looks like it could be his now. It also allows Declan Rice to do what he does best.

A great team performance from every player. I'm not completely convinced by Konsa's concentration level, as he put the team in danger twice, but Elliot Anderson looks a revelation. Hopefully this is the kickstart we need for a great 2026.

    Stewart, Scunthorpe

A bit of a perfect storm for Tuchel last night. He was playing a fairly average side, away from home, that have just enough about them to think they can have a go which left space for us to exploit. Credit though for putting them to the sword and being more enjoyable to watch.

We have seen refinement from Thomas Tuchel over the six games that he's been in charge. We have seen the same principles and ideas, some of which were clicking into place a little bit more and to more success than previously.

Some of the individual performances were really strong. We talk about the 'Golden Generation' but football is a team game and the collective is always bigger than the individuals.

This performance was a great example of how Thomas Tuchel can utilise his players. There was chemistry between certain players that have played together at club level.

We were going to Serbia thinking this is going to be the toughest game of the group and they were at it from the first moment.

There were positives all over the pitch so I don't think it could have gone any better. Sometimes when you play the better teams you raise your level.

When you play teams like Andorra you can sometimes can dragged down because they are defending so deep from the first minute.

  19. Bolvia reach play-offs to dash Venezuela hopespublished at 10:34 British Summer Time

Spare a thought for Venezuela, who were sitting in the play-off spot going into the final round of qualifying in South America, with a first ever place in a World Cup finals in their sights.

A Venezuela side that included former West Brom, Newcastle and Everton striker Salomon Rondon in their ranks held a one-point advantage over Bolivia in the table.

They entertained a talented Colombia XI in their final game, while Bolivia were playing Brazil in the high altitude of their home stadium in El Alto.

Things were looking promising for Venezuela when they twice took the lead in the opening stages, but a four-goal burst either side of half-time from Sporting striker Luis Suarez took the game away from them.

Rondon did manage to get on the scoresheet to make it 5-3 with 14 minutes to play, but a Colombia side that included Crystal Palace midfielder Jefferson Lerma and former Premier League players Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez quickly restored their three-goal advantage and ran out 6-3 winners.

Bolivia, meanwhile, stole in to book their place in the play-offs thanks to a 1-0 win over Brazil that was decided by a first-half penalty from Santos midfielder Miguel Terceros.

Great result and good performance. Definitely shouldn’t get carried away, but improvements in all areas that were previously problems. Faster passing, versatility, options. Psychologically, the players seem less fearful and they are playing with confidence. I hope it continues to grow from here.

    Michaelangelo, London

This result shows the team is bigger than the sum of its parts. It proves that no one is indispensable. Players must see that their egos need to be put aside or they won't play. Some behave like the kid in the playground and that should stop now.
