  • PLATER RATINGS

West Ham finally picked up their first victory of the Women's Super League season with a composed triumph at home to Everton.

The Irons, who earned their first point in a 1-1 draw with Leicester, external last weekend, made the most of the visitors' sloppiness at the back to move two points clear of the foot of the table.

Anouk Denton's opening goal was somewhat lucky, with a miscued cross from a tight angle beating Emily Ramsey at the near post despite the goalkeeper being able to get a hand to it.

Much of the first half until that point had been relatively open but the Hammers soon found themselves with a two-goal advantage as Amber Tysiak nodded home a Vivianne Asseyi corner.

Everton switched off when playing out from the back to gift West Ham their third, with Riko Ueki doing well to flick the ball into danger before finding Shekiera Martinez – left completely unmarked – who wriggled into the six-yard area before tucking past Ramsey.

Verena Hanshaw nearly added a fourth, but her drilled effort from the edge of the box bounced off the far post. The hosts also twice had shots cleared off the line.

Katja Snoeijs pulled one back late on for Everton when she fired home from a corner, but it proved to be nothing more than consolation.

Everton struggled to make much of an impression despite trying to stretch the hosts' defence and work openings down the wings, with the likes of Toni Payne and Ornella Vignola's efforts being muted.

Analysis: Well-drilled Irons get deserved victory

In one game, West Ham have doubled their goals tally.

Rehanne Skinner's side have often been underwhelming this season, but they made the most of their chances and set up in a way that proved difficult for the Toffees to handle.

Using wide areas to stretch the Everton back line produced space inside for Martinez, Ueki and Asseyi to allow show their talents, tiring the visitors' defence as they tried to keep up.

In midfield, they were switched on and broke up play when the Toffees tried to counter-attack before using the possession to spark moves of their own.

While the game was relatively close in the opening exchanges, two quick goals for Skinner's side unsettled Everton and, after that, they never looked the same calibre of opponent, misplacing passes and failing to track runs.

The Irons' high press made it even trickier for the Toffees to try to find a response, with players not being given time to work the ball out from the back.

West Ham were simply sharper, more tactically astute and did not allow their standards to dip.

It has taken time for Skinner to be able to produce results with her West Ham team, but the past two games show that they have reasons to be positive.

Everton, meanwhile, who are now just a point ahead of West Ham and three off the bottom, have faltered since their promising start and need to turn things around.

Without the injured Kelly Gago, they were a shadow of the team who were only narrowly beaten 2-1 by leaders Manchester City last time out.
