  1. It's about taking lessons out of this - Clementpublished at 10:03 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers

    Rangers

Aberdeen's win on Wednesday put more pressure on Rangers manager Philippe Clement, whose side has now lost three of the opening 10 games in the Scottish Premiership and are already nine points off the league leaders.

Clement said: "We started the game well, but when Aberdeen took over and we were struggling, we went behind and I made changes.

"We came out in the second half in a really good way, we were the team pushing for the win all second half. We were much more times in their box but weren't clinical enough in the final third. They scored the decisive goal.

"It's disappointing to lose the three points here. On a really lucky night we could have won this game. It's about taking lessons out of this.

"It's one of the better performances from this new squad but it was not good enough in the result, there's still a lot to work on.

"You can't say [the players] played a bad game, but we need to work on things to make it better. Aberdeen were not the better team to win, it was a game both teams deserved a point each."

  2. 'Still early' for title talks - Thelinpublished at 10:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aberdeen 2-1 Rangers

    Aberdeen

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin told BBC Scotland: "First of all, the atmosphere at Pittodrie was amazing. It was an emotional game. Our first half was really, really strong.

"Then the character of the players was really strong, the players who came on to the pitch gave us extra energy.

"I know how hard the players try and work, but it's also how they react. They believe in each other and I'm so happy for them to get the points."

The 46-year-old Swede, who took charge in the summer, added that it's too early to talk about the Dons being title contenders.

"No, it's still early," he said. "We know that. We have to stay focused. We still have to improve things and we know it's a long season."

  3. 'We've made a brilliant start so I'm really pleased with where we're at'published at 09:56 Greenwich Mean Time

    Celtic 2-0 Dundee

    Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers tells BBC Scotland: "Alistair Johnston has got the feeling now of scoring goals so he's hungry.

"But he's top class, he's a real leader, very strong defensively and a tough boy mentally. He's done fantastic for us but tonight was also a good chance to get Tony [Ralston] some minutes.

"My only focus is on ourselves, looking at us improving our performance level as we go through the season.

"We should have won against Aberdeen, we went a bit slack but we'll learn from that. I'm really pleased with the squad, we've been fantastic with lots of improvements to make.

"We'll be ready for that [cup semi-final against Aberdeen], we love going to Hampden. We're in a good place, getting players back so we'll be ready for Sunday."

  9. Spurs progress 'an ever-evolving process' for Postecogloupublished at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time

    Tottenham 2-1 Man City

    Tottenham Hotspur

Speaking of Spurs, they managed to bundle Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, after which boss Ange Postecoglou told Sky Sports: "It's a cup tie played against a formidable opponent, I thought we did well for the most part.

"We didn't allow too many clear-cut chances. We could have put the game away, but City are always going to push you.

"It's an ever-evolving process, this team is growing all the time, but when you have growth you are going to stumble.

"As disappointed as we were on Sunday (1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace), I had great belief we could come out today and put on a great show. Both our goals were quality goals - they have to be as City don't give easy chances."

Just a couple of additional points about Wednesday's game.

At no point during Erik ten Hag's reign did Manchester United score five goals against a Premier League club.

And they also didn't score four in the first half of any game under the Dutchman.

Ruud van Nistelrooy had a good night.

Great game at Old Trafford last night, the players performing as though a huge weight has been lifted from them, but let's not get carried away with calls for RVN to be the next manager. United have been here before, and need to get this appointment right. Ruud may get his chance one day, but maybe not just yet.

  13. Van Nistelrooy 'looked the part'published at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man Utd 5-2 Leicester

    Mark Ogden
Senior writer for ESPN on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast

Ruud van Nistelrooy has reminded us all who he is and I would imagine that the next time that a job comes up in the Premier League or Championship, he would be high on the list. When he walked out of the tunnel at the start of the game, he looked the part. At times, Erik ten Hag didn't look the part.

If you are in a dressing room and Van Nistelrooy is giving you instructions, you sit up and take notice, and at times with Ten Hag, it didn't look like a credible personality that could convince. The package with Ten Hag didn't really work and at least Van Nistelrooy has the appearance and the presence.

[Wednesday's game] was a little bit of an illusion in the fact that the type of chances that Manchester United created at the weekend, they scored, but I don’t think we can say that United have suddenly turned a corner. There is still plenty of work for Ruud van Nistelrooy or Ruben Amorim to get through, but a win is a win and it will boost the morale and confidence in the group.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will speak to the media later ahead of Manchester United's Premier League game with Chelsea on Sunday.

It will be his first full news conference since being asked to step in following Erik ten Hag's dismissal as manager on Monday.

Van Nistelrooy did speak to rights holders in the tunnel after Wednesday's game, including BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It is clear that this is going to be short term, so for me today was the most important day after what happened," he said.

"In such short notice we had to have things getting going and get into the quarter-finals. Now the focus is on Chelsea on Sunday and I do not really look any further."

  17. Van Nistelrooy will continue to help Man Utd 'in any capacity'published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time

    Man Utd 5-2 Leicester

    Manchester United

After Wednesday's win, Manchester United's interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy was asked on Sky Sports if he wants to help the club going forward: "Of course - I came here as an assistant to help the club. Now in this role, I’m helping as long as needed. In the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future. That’s what I'm here for."

On if he wants to be part of the new coaching set-up: "I’m here to help and serve and give my everything for the club in any capacity. There's so many people here around me that want the best for the club and that will never change.

"As long as I am needed, I will do my utmost for the club and the team in any capacity."

Whilst the Amorim “will he, won’t he” situation continues, Van Nistelrooy adopts the Kevin Keegan footballing philosophy - it doesn’t matter how many goals you concede, as long as you score more. Let’s see what happens on Sunday when Chelsea visit. If Amorim says no, do we turn to Ruud?

    Daily Mirror

The Mirror leads on the same line regarding Ruben Amorim's coaching staff. That would suggest that Ruud van Nistelrooy will not be kept on as part of Amorim's backroom team but if Wednesday's five-goal display is anything to go by, it seems the former United striker is determined to enjoy his stint as interim boss, however long it is.
