Morgan Gibbs-White missed a first-half penalty as an injury-hit Nottingham Forest failed to find a way through Sturm Graz in the Europa League.

Manager Sean Dyche was forced into making seven changes to the side that drew with Manchester United on Saturday but Forest had numerous opportunities to take the lead.

Captain Gibbs-White was given a golden chance to breach the Austrians' defence 10 minutes before half-time after Emanuel Aiwu handled in the box.

The England international's weak penalty was saved by Oliver Christensen, low to his left and Ryan Yates was unable to follow up.

Dyche's side should have taken the lead earlier in the tie. James McAtee was inches away from putting Forest in the lead but he could not find the bottom corner after a well-worked free-kick.

Forest continued to pile on the pressure from set-pieces. Nikola Milenkovic nodded a corner back into the box where Ryan Yates saw his header cleared off the line by Arjan Malic.

With minutes to spare, Nicolas Dominguez's powerful drive struck the crossbar via a wicked deflection.

Before Forest had their chance from the spot, the home side thought they had taken the lead when Maurice Malone tapped in from John Victor's poor save but the offside flag spared the goalkeeper's blushes.

The draw leaves Forest 18th on five points, while Sturm Graz sit a point adrift in 23rd.

Analysis: New signings miss opportunity to impress

With striker Igor Jesus suspended and Chris Wood injured, Arnaud Kalimuendo made his first start for Forest since signing for a reported £26m from Rennes in the summer.

His first involvement came 10 minutes in when he had the chance to take a touch, turn and shoot but instead opted for a failed lay-off to McAtee.

The 23-year-old had just seven touches in the first half, despite Forest having 55% of possession.

Kalimuendo was found with a defence-splitting pass by Neco Williams in the second half, but his failure to get a shot away perhaps highlighted a lack of recent game time.

Dyche gave another summer signing the chance to impress in Austria, but like Kalimuendo, McAtee failed to deliver.

The former Manchester City midfielder was making his sixth Forest appearance since his summer move and should have opened the scoring inside 10 minutes but he put his effort inches wide.

There were glimpses of the talent McAtee possesses but his 70% pass accuracy summed up his night.

What's next for these teams?

Forest return to Premier League action as they welcome Leeds United to the City Ground on Saturday, 9 November.

Over in Austria, Sturm Graz host table-topping RB Salzburg on the same day.
