Championship side Preston North End stunned Premier League Fulham winning 16-15 on penalties in the longest shootout in Carabao Cup history.

Ryan Ledson scored the winning penalty in the third round after Timothy Castagne blazed over the bar for Fulham.

Fulham's Jorge Cuenca and Preston's Kaine Kesler Hayden had earlier seen their own misses cancelled out.

Preston's success meant the shootout eclipsed the previous record set by Derby County and Carlisle in 2016 when the Rams won 14-13 in a shootout.

"I've never been involved in a shootout like that," said Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom.

"As it wore on, eight-all, nine-all, it made me more determined to win it because of the effort and commitment put in to get to penalties.

"We were the team, certainly in injury time, trying to get the game to penalties. It was a great atmosphere. We'll look forward to the draw but we have to park it, we have other things to focus on now."

Ledson put Preston ahead after 35 minutes when his first-time strike from the edge of the box nestled into the bottom corner.

Kesler Hayden had a low diving header brilliantly saved by away goalkeeper Steven Benda as the home side impressed.

Reiss Nelson scored his first Fulham goal to level the tie just after the hour mark.

Tom Cairney played in Ryan Sessegnon, his cross swept home at the near post by Nelson on his first start for the club.

But a Fulham side with the entire 11 changed from the weekend draw with West Ham changed by boss Marco Silva looked disjointed at stages and missed several chances in normal time.

Castagne’s whipped ball into the box was blazed over the bar by Rodrigo Muniz who got too much power on his effort and Harrison Reed's fierce strike came off the crossbar with Muniz was unable to convert the rebound.

Those misses would ultimately prove costly as last season's semi-finalists exited the competition in the most dramatic of shootouts.
